DR. KEITH DAVIES JONES

It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Keith Davies Jones; beloved husband and father; caring physician; musician and composer; animal lover; life giver. Known for his kind and gentle heart and quiet manner, his generosity, and his devotion to his family, church, and community, his loss will be deeply felt.

Keith was born in Wrexham, Wales, 5 April 1947, to Noel Davies Jones and Winifred Elsie (Avey) Jones. He attended Stand Grammar School in Lancashire, England, where he sang in the choir, ran cross-country, and played the trombone.

He attended the Welsh National School of Medicine in Cardiff, and competed on the University of Cardiff cross-country team with full colours. In university, he met Gwyneth, who was studying Chemistry. They married in July 1970 in Trinidad, where Keith was an exchange student in surgery.

He graduated from medical school in 1971, and worked in surgical specialties from 1972-79 at the University Hospital of Wales, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (England.) He then trained in radiotherapy and oncology, at Churchill Hospital, Oxford, 1980-82 and Christie Hospital, Manchester, 1982-86. He was an Associate Professor at University of Manchester. In 1983, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Radiology (England.)

The family moved to Winnipeg in July 1986, where Keith worked as a Radiation Oncologist at CancerCare Manitoba from 1986-2012. He was Head of Department from 1993-2004 and Associate Professor of Oncology at the University of Manitoba. His dedication to his patients and his impact on their lives will not be forgotten.

Keith’s love of music suffused his home and was passed to his children and grandchildren. Since childhood, Keith loved composing music and studied composition privately. More than 30 of his choral and orchestral pieces premiered in Canada, USA and UK. He was a member of the International Trombone Association Review Committee since 1999, and over 100 of his reviews are published in their journal. He was a voting member of the Canadian Music Centre.

For over thirty years until the week of his death, he played with the Chamber Orchestra at St. John’s College, and more recently with Manitoba Trombone Collective. He very much enjoyed summer Saturday evenings playing chamber music at Pat Spencer’s home.

A devoted member of St. George’s Anglican Church Choir for almost 40 years, he was also an Executive Member of the Joie de Vivre Choir, and frequently helped out many other choirs.

Keith was a proud Welshman who taught himself Welsh (a language his forebears were forbidden to speak.) He was a member of the Welsh Medical Society, past President of the St. David’s Society of Winnipeg, and trustee of the Welsh National Cymanfu Ganu Association from 2002-2008.

Keith died suddenly on February 13, 2025, from a massive brain bleed. He will be greatly missed. His family wants to particularly thank the staff at the MICU at the Health Sciences Centre, especially Jennifer, the night nurse during the three nights he was there. Your kindness and professionalism were greatly appreciated. To the Gift of Life Team and transplant staff, it is comforting to know that his liver and kidney helped to save two lives, continuing his legacy of sacrifice and love. We are so grateful to our friends and family for the outpouring of condolences and support, and a special thank you to Father Sherpard Gwende.

Keith is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gwyneth, and three children, daughter Zilla (Heulwen), and her husband Larry Strachan and their two children Jericho and Kamil; son Eifion, and daughter El (Eluned); and his beloved dog, Ramsay.

A Celebration of Life is on St David’s Day, March 1, at 11.00 am, at the Parish of St George’s Crescentwood at 168 Wilton St at Grosvenor Avenue. The service will be live streamed at www.stgeorges.mb.ca

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St George’s Church Memorial Fund at 168 Wilton Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3M 3C3.

  • It was a great shock to learn of Keith's passing. He and I collaborated on music. I would give him one of my poems and seemingly in no time a song would emerge. He had a gift for fitting apropriate notes to the prose. Keith will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Gwyneth and family so sorry, for your loss. Rest in Peace dear friend and as we say in Welsh, "Cwsc a gwyn dy fyd" "Sleep and be Blest". Tom Jones. - Posted by: Tom Jones (Friend) on: Mar 11, 2025

Keith was a devoted member of our ensemble and contributed not only his talent, but his enthusiasm for the group as well. He will be missed but not forgotten. We will be honoured to perform his piece that he wrote for us - "Rise Heart, Sweet Art" - at the Manitoba Music Lovers Festival on the 4th of May this year. - Posted by: Chris Lalonde (Music Friend) on: Feb 25, 2025

  • Dr. Jones was my teacher while I was doing my residency at CancerCare Manitoba back in 2002-2007. I worked with him closely in cancer clinic. Most gentle human being I had seen so loving, so caring. Always smiling. His passion was music so he used to tell me about different genres of music etc. He will be missed. CancerCare Manitoba lost jewel today. We are so proud of him what he did for Manitobans while in practice - Posted by: DR RASHMI KOUL (TEACHER) on: Feb 25, 2025

  • What an extraordinarily well lived life was Keith Davies Jones. I first met him while working at CancerCare Manitoba, but it’s only recently, and through reading of his many accomplishments, that I’ve learned so much more about the person that he was. I’ll miss our pre-Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra concert chats while sitting in the Concert Hall. To Gwyneth, your children, grandchildren, and Keith’s entire family and friends, I send you my heartfelt condolences. - Posted by: Michelle Powder (Former co-worker CancerCare Manitoba) on: Feb 24, 2025

  • I am very sorry to read of Dr. Jones passing. I met him in the 1990’s working with the Manitoba Blood & Bone Marrow Transplant Program at HSC/CancerCare. • Dr. Keith Jones was an incredibly sweet man. A kind and gentle soul. I was his nurse in the radiation/ Brachytherapy unit. I could talk and ask him anything and he always listened passionately and answered questions with great pleasure. He offered so much care and concern for all of his patients. I am very honored to have known him. - Posted by: Marilyn Burkitt (Coworker) on: Feb 22, 2025

  • Keith's death was shocking news! When visiting the small grammar school in Dorking, Surrey, England, that his mother and her brother (my father) attended, Keith donated an amount of money to the long-time fundraising dream of purchasing a new school computer. A huge blessing for many over the years. - Posted by: Margot Avey (Cousin of Keith) on: Feb 22, 2025

  • I was very sad to read of Dr. Jones’s passing. He was one of the oncologists involved with my mother’s care and treatment, and I will never forget how kind, compassionate, and honest he was, during a very distressing time for our family. My deep condolences to his family for their loss. - Posted by: Enid Barnes (daughter of former patient) on: Feb 22, 2025
