MARTIN HARDER SAWATZKY

December 21, 1940 - February, 18, 2025

Martin Sawatzky passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 18, 2025, at the age of 84.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Roland (Anikó) and Diana (Andy); grandchildren, Oskar, Alma and Delta; his many siblings, nieces, nephews and former spouse Mathilde.

Martin was born in the village of Grüntal in Menno Colony, Paraguay, to Peter and Maria Sawatzky, the first of 14 children. He attended the Mennonite Seminary in Montevideo, the Faculty of Theology in Buenos Aires, and Union Theological Seminary in New York. Martin moved to Canada in 1969 where he started his family and later became the lead minister of Niagara United Mennonite Church, and a chaplain at the University of Western Ontario in London. After moving to Manitoba in 1987, he was the lead minister of Sargent Ave., Homewood and Wingham Mennonite Churches.

Martin will be remembered for his deep intelligence, wonderful sermons, sense of humour, storytelling, strong hugs, and his laughter.

A service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at Charleswood Mennonite Church, 699 Haney Street, Winnipeg, MB. The live stream can be accessed at the following link: https://youtube.com/live/kLc86fYEEeQ?feature=share
