DAVID ALLAN CAIRNS

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David Allan Cairns, who lost his battle with cancer, surrounded by his family, on February 21, 2025, in Winnipeg at the age of 56.

He was born on April 2, 1968. David leaves behind his beloved stepchildren: Brittany Mancini, Alyshea Mancini (Bruno) and son Miguel, Kyo and Jasmine Larose, and grandchildren, Jayden and Jordan Botelho. He is also survived by his sister Judy Deepe (Mark), brother Ian Cairns, and the Barrie family, as well as nephews, Christian Deepe and Brady McIvor. David was predeceased by his parents: Robert A. Cairns and MaryJane Cairns (née Sterling).

David lived his entire life in Winnipeg. He worked in various courier, international truck driving and dispatching roles. He enjoyed a 25 year career with Parsec International as Terminal Manager CP Rail Intermodal. David’s dedication and passion for the work and his employees were evident in so many ways. One of his greatest passions was for Gull Lake where he had grown up as a child enjoying all that the lake life offered. He became an active participant and leader in the community. His efforts in preserving the lake water quality and especially successfully combating the spread of Zebra mussels is his legacy.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Manitoba CancerCare, especially Dr. Beshara, and nurses, Virginia and Kim, for their compassionate care during David’s journey. Special thanks are also extended to Grant and Cathie Bolin for their consistent support and care.

A funeral service will be held on March 6, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway. There will be a private family interment at a later date.

David’s warmth, integrity, and dedication to his family, friends, and community will be deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice in David’s memory.

Rest in peace, David.

You will be forever in our hearts.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Hey Dave, Fridays at the Gull Lake transfer station just won't be the same without seeing your smiling face and chit chatting while you drop off your recycling or retrieving an important travel mug! Lol We lost an angel on earth, but no doubt in my mind you're a great angel up there now!, likely drumming up some help from the boss about the project so dear to your heart, the zebra mussels... he does work in mysterious ways.. It was great knowing you Dave, if only for a short time ... See ya later, alligator :) - Posted by: Theresa (Friend) on: Apr 06, 2025

  • David was such a gentle giant of a man. His hospitality was so relaxed and enjoyed. He made you feel welcomed every time at the lake. As one of his sister's friends, I would head up there in the summer when Judy was around, and he always said---You know, you can come anytime, bring the kids and have fun and you don't need Judy to be here. That was his way.......... He knew all the best restaurants in the city---- not just the fancy, upscale dining, but the really good home cooking style places ---and they knew him and you could tell he was well respected . We lost an angel on earth, and he will be very missed. Angela - Posted by: ANGELA DRIEDGER (family friend) on: Mar 03, 2025

  • My memories go back to when David was born. We moved from Winnipeg in 1971 so there were only a few visits back to Gull Lake but David was always there. From the time he and my son, Jeff played in the sandbox to the time he convinced me to water ski after decades of not doing so to the last couple of summers when he would take my grandchildren tubing and skiing. The lake will never be the same without him😢. Rest in peace David, you deserve it. - Posted by: Jean (Hopper) Johnson (Next door neighbour, Gull Lake) on: Mar 02, 2025

  • Dave. It seems so unreal that you will no longer be here with us at this great place Gull Lake. Your AIS dedication is truly that. Legendary!! Your work will continue but with several people. No one person can replace you. Your commitment knowledge and want to keep the lake clean was and will continue to be a success. I am proud to have known and worked with you on the GLBMB. And I am most proud to call you my friend. Everyone who truly knew you could see just what an awesome individual you were. First to help out. First to offer a drink. First to talk about anything that came up. I will miss you coming by and having a little grey goose. Then heading home to back into or over what every was on the driveway. Most of all I will miss your guidance. The world is a far lesser place with you gone. The saying is only the good die young. Well God got himself the greatest when he took you from us. Rest assured every Saturday around 3-4 o'clock I will toast the famous Dave Cairns Gull Lake Happy Hour! He's to you my friend one last time. Cheers buddy. Rest in peace and keep a watch over those you care about. You are deeply missed and have left a huge hole here for the rest of us!!
