JAMES ALFRED APPLEYARD

May 6, 1939 - February 21, 2025

With great sadness, we announce the passing of James Alfred Appleyard on February 21, 2025 at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 85.

James was born on May 6, 1939 at the family farm in the RM of Rockwood. He attended Grosse Isle School and then lived his adult life in Winnipeg. James worked in the finance department for the Manitoba Government, at the Legislature building, for many years until his retirement. After retirement, James continued to work at numerous odd jobs, including bartending at the Granite Curling Club, condo security, and driving seniors to appointments and errands.

James was a man of many talents. You could ask him to play any song on the piano and he would play it, even though the song sounded the same as every other song he played. He also played drums for years. James would often arrive for a visit with a freshly baked pie, especially in prime saskatoon season, and still picked fresh saskatoons this past summer. He was a collector of many things, especially tea pots, and many other treasures that he found while searching garage sales for a deal.

James is survived by is brother Douglas (Beverly); sister in-law Janice; nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. Predeceasing James were his parents, Robert and Amy (Lindley); his siblings, Ruth (Mel), Kenneth (Viola), Bob (Doreen), Isabel (George), and Ron.

As per James request, cremation has taken place. A date for a gathering and interment, at Grassmere Cemetery, will be announced at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I was saddened to hear of James' passing. He was a doorman in my parents' condo building so we often got to see James when we were arriving and departing the building. He was a kind man with a sense of humour, and always ready to pass on a good word and smile. I know he will be missed on the Crescent. My condolences to James' family and close friends. - Posted by: Stephen Borys (friend) on: Mar 05, 2025

  • Our condolences to Janice and family. Roger and I met James when Roger worked at the same Condo Security job in Winnipeg. - Posted by: Roger and Rose-Marie (Huberdeau) Fouasse (Friend of the family) on: Mar 03, 2025

  • I worked with James in security and found him to be a wonderful and very caring gentleman. He always had a smile and a positive attitude which he willingly shared with others. It's funny how some people that you come across in life, even for a short time, leave a lasting impression on you...James was one of those to me. I hope "Appleyard Castle", a painting I did for him is kept in his family as a lasting memory of this first class man. Rest in Peace James. - Posted by: James Haier (Former work associate) on: Mar 02, 2025

  • My deepest sympathies to Jim’s family. I attended many meetings with Jim in the 1990s and remember him always having a smile and a kind word. - Posted by: Marleen Church (Friend/co-worker) on: Mar 01, 2025
