ALBERT ALLAN MAYER

Albert Allan Mayer was born on the farm in Alpine, Manitoba on August 26, 1933, to Frank and Betty Mayer.
He is survived by his son Doug, daughter Laureen, grandchildren Vanessa and William, stepson Kent and stepdaughter Karen. Also left to cherish his memory are his sisters, Dorothy (Alex) Soloway, and Lynn Lylyk, along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Gina, sisters Irene House and Leila Woods, as well as his brothers-in-law Bob Woods and Gene Lylyk.
Albert loved the farm with its modest loving atmosphere that his parents provided. He attended school in Alpine, MB to which he had to walk half a mile to catch the horse pulled van/sleigh and then travel an additional 8 miles just to get to school. He attended high school in Benito, MB. graduating in 1952 and then in the fall began teaching on permit at Deer Path School. Al then went on to teacher's college graduating in 1954. Albert taught for 37 years at several schools throughout Manitoba including Crestview, High Bluff, Portage La Prairie and in St. James School Division (while also attending University of Manitoba to receive his Bachelor of Arts and Education degrees). He retired in 1990, however often not idle, he worked part time as lease manager and was known as the local Santa Claus at the Polo Park Mall.
Albert was an avid sports fan, he enjoyed attending the Winnipeg Jets, and the Winnipeg Goldeyes games, as well watching and cheering on his beloved Toronto Blue Jays. Al also loved to travel, he especially enjoyed going with friends on cruises.
Al was greatly involved in community affairs and had a deep love for children; he was instrumental in the formation of the Crestview Church and a lifetime member. He supervised the junior curling programs at Assiniboine Memorial and was the club president. Al's passion was baseball, he was a recognized coach for 40+ years and was notable inducted into the Manitoba Softball Hall of Fame. Al was also involved for 30 years in the Assiniboine Optimist Club, serving in various capacities, including the position of President for 10 years.
Albert spent his final years at the Charleswood personal care home, many thanks to the staff for his care. He will be missed.
A service will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to Manitoba Arthritis and/or Cancer Care.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I just learned of Al’s passing. I played on the 1978 Jr. Men’s team that went to St Johns, Nfld. for the Jr. Nationals. What a great guy! After we were done playing ball, we spent a couple days touring the area. Al and his coaching partner Joe Nespor rented a car and we spent a day exploring. I had just finished university with a teaching degree and Al arranged for me to sub in his classroom a few times. In knowing how active he was during his life, I would have to say he had a life well lived! - Posted by: Jack Coulson (Player on Assiniboine Optimists Jr Men’s Fastball Team.) on: Apr 21, 2025

  • Our sincere condolences to Al’s family and friends. - Posted by: Dwight and Nancy Adams (AMCC friend and school teacher to our two children) on: Mar 03, 2025

  • Albert was a dear friend who accomplished much in his life as described in his obituary. He will be remembered and missed. It was not possible to to spend time with him in the past few years and to be present at his funeral since we are out of the country at this time. Our condolences to members of his family who helped care for him in his latter years God Bless Roland & Edna - Posted by: Roland & Edna Otto (Long time friend) on: Mar 01, 2025

  • My heartfelt condolences go out to all the family at this difficult time. Al was a great coach, teacher and friend to many over the years. I was very fortunate to have him as a fastball coach over many years and as a teaching mentor. He invested a tremendous amount of his time to provide opportunities for both youth and adults. He will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Tony Szarkiewicz (Friend) on: Mar 01, 2025
