CLIVE WIGHTMAN

It is with great sadness we announce that after a lengthy battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, Clive Wightman departed this world on the evening of February 27, 2025, with many of his loved ones by his side.

He was predeceased by his father Clive (2023) and mother Patricia (2017). Clive leaves behind his wife Kim, his daughters, Jade (Brandon) and Mikaela (Maxence), his son Holton, his siblings, Bob (Daniela), Reg (Kim), Nancy (Chris), his nieces and nephews, Nic, Ali, Anthony, Dominique, Benedict, Grace, Faye and Libby, his brother-in-law Michael, his mother-in-law Sharon, and his grandchildren, Rose, Nora and Clive (who all adored him).

‘Cliver’ was born Clive Pickard Wightman on January 25, 1959, in Toronto, Ontario. He made many close and lasting friendships during his primary and high school years that he cherished deeply. He went on to study at the University of Winnipeg where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1981. He earned his Chartered General Accountant professional designation in the mid 1980s and started working as an accountant before eventually moving on to a distinguished 35-year career with the government. He thoroughly enjoyed working for the City as their Director of Community Services and was fortunate to have many friends among his colleagues. It was there that he developed a deep passion for social justice, advocating for the homeless and Indigenous populations.

Clive was an outstanding hockey player. He played high level hockey throughout his youth and was well known for his screamer of a snapshot. For the last 40 years, Clive gathered with the same group of guys for weekly poker; the final game being only a few days before he passed. While Clive was ill, these loud Monday nights full of laughs kept him going.

His family meant everything to him. He doted on his girls, Jade and Mikaela, and he was a proud Papa to his three grandkids who were a huge part of his life. He would spend hours swapping stories with Holton, imparting his fatherly ‘nuggets of wisdom’ upon him. Kim was his best friend and love of his life. He was a cherished older brother to Bob, Nancy and Reg.

He treated all those he encountered with respect and connected with people very easily. He was genuine and had a huge heart. He was a peacemaker with a quick wit and an undeniable sense of humour. He could be caught on occasion wearing T-shirts with things on them like ‘my name is Super Clive - I’m the greatest Dad alive’ or ‘I’m too cool to be called Grandpa’.

Clive will be forever loved and missed.

Our sincere thanks to the team at Riverview Health Centre for their professional, kind and competent care and for helping make his life very comfortable near the end.

His Celebration of Life will be held March 14, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Thompson “In the Park” Funeral Home and Cemetery, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Clive's memory may be made to Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 47 Squire Baker’s Lane, Markham, ON L3P 3G8.

Condolences & Memories (13 entries)

  • Clive and I were in the same class at Tuxedo Park from Grades 1 – 6. He was a devil – cute as could be, with a mischievous smile, a twinkle in his eye and a wicked sense of humor. Whether it was a field trip, a hayride or a skating party, if Clive was along, you knew you were in for some fun! He was the scourge of substitute teachers and darling of everyone's Mom: "Such a nice boy! And so cute, too!" They say you never forget your first kiss. Clive was mine - setting a pretty high bar those who came after, particularly for someone in Grade 2! Obviously experienced. I was terribly sad to hear that the world has lost such a charming joker – and far too early. While I lost touch with Clive when I left Winnipeg in Grade 7, I will always remember him fondly. I am certain that many wonderful memories will comfort his beautiful wife and wonderful family in grieving such a difficult and painful loss. - Posted by: Beverly Behan (Classmate) on: Apr 06, 2025

  • Thoughts and prayers from the Mitchell family to the Wightmans and our intergenerational relationship. Keith and Elinor, our dear and departed parents, so much enjoyed the company of Dr. Clive Wightman and Dr. Pat Wightman, particularly at the weekly Winter Club gatherings. Geraldine and Nancy were best friends as children. In 1971 most of the Mitchell family had to move to Oakville, Ontario as that was where my Dad's employer sent him to preside over their new Canadian head office. Our family room on Park Boulevard often had Nancy Bob and Reg all in attendance. Such a tragic death for Clive who gave so much to everyone. Heartfelt thoughts to his beloved wife Kim and their children and grandchildren. • I am beyond saddened to hear of Clive's passing. I worked with Clive 40 years ago while we were articling together at an accounting firm. I'm pretty sure Clive hated it as much as I did. Thank gawd for his daily presence during that time. We laughed together, at times hysterically, in a manic sort of way. I was grateful that he was right beside me as we walked the length of our accounting cage. Clive was especially proud of his two beautiful young daughters. They were his pride and joy. He considered himself the luckiest Pop in the world. I can only imagine what a fabulous grandfather he was to his grandchildren. Although we lost touch with each other over the years I will always remember Clive with such love and fondness. Clive made the world a better place. Rest easy my friend. My sincerest sympathies to your family. You will be so dearly missed. Elly Black (nee Parsonage) - Posted by: Elly Black (Friend) on: Mar 12, 2025

  • Deepest condolences to all the family. Many years ago, when I worked at the City, I had the great privilege and pleasure to work with Clive on a few projects. He had a dazzling intellect and brilliant humour, as well as being a wonderfully kind and fine person, truly exceptional. I will remember him always, with great fondness. - Posted by: Jane Dick (former colleague) on: Mar 11, 2025

  • My condolences to Clive's wife and family and to his sister and brothers. I met Clive when we were teenagers and that night was a legendary! We became fast friends and he earned the Nickname The Cleave after that fateful night. Many drinks and butts and golf games followed and breaking the sliding glass patio door with my forehead earned me a lot of laughter over the years retelling that story. Cleave, you brought a lot of smiles and joy and I always loved our calls, meet ups and the fun we had. RIP dear friend. You will be missed. May your memory be for a blessing. - Posted by: Harvey Minuk (Friend) on: Mar 11, 2025
