LARRY ATEAH
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Larry Ateah, aged 88, who left us peacefully on March 2, 2025.
Larry will be lovingly remembered by his wife Diana of 62 years, his children Kathy (Ed), Laura (Tom), Dean (Monica), Jason (Lindsay) and eight beautiful grandchildren: Alex, Zach, Karly, Hope, Ryan, Mary, Parker, and Ruby.
He is predeceased by his parents Sam and Jessie, older sister Dale and twin sister Larrette.
Larry was born in Victoria Beach on February 8, 1937. He grew up in the community and worked with his dad supplying wood and ice to the cottagers. Larry moved to Winnipeg for school and worked at various construction jobs in Manitoba and Ontario until he started his career with Lucerne foods, ending as a Plant Engineer. Although he and Diana lived and raised their family in Winnipeg, Victoria Beach was always home. They built a beautiful log cottage in 1970 which eventually became their permanent home. After retirement he started a water business and managed the VB recycling program until he retired (again) at 80.
Larry and Diana loved travelling with their RV south to Arizona and Texas, and north to Alaska, making life-long friendships along the way. The extended family camping trips to Rushing River were a memorable highlight for all. Larry had a resourceful, inventive mind and he could fix or build just about anything, with a garage which rivalled Home Hardware. Larry was loved and respected by so many. His warmth, generosity, kindness, and humor touched the lives of all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held at the East Beaches Social Scene, 3 Ateah Road in Victoria Beach on Sunday, March 9 at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of your

I met Larry & Diana when I started teaching with their daughters Kathy & Laura back in the 90s. I was lucky enough to spend time at their beautiful home in VB getting to know their family. It was clear, they loved their home & family very much. I loved Larry’s stories, his friendly welcoming manner & the of course the laughter. Larry will be greatly missed but I am so glad to have known him. He was a great guy! Our Lord Selkirk teaching group will be sure to raise a toast to him when we invade Diana’s porch during our yearly get together. Rest in peace Larry. Sending my sincere condolences to Diana, Kathy, Laura, Dean, Jason & your families. Andrea Thio - Posted by: Andrea Thio (Friend) on: Mar 11, 2025

My deepest of condolences to Diana, family and friends. My father Brian and Larry were cousins, I remember my first visit as an adult, my husband and I drove to Victoria Beach, in our motorhome, going off childhood memories, in search of family history. I was looking specifically for Larry Ateah, we stopped at the greenhouse and asked the first person we saw and of was Owen Griffith. Two birds with one stone. We visited with Owen before we ended up at Larry and Diana’s. But the second I walked out of our motorhome, they greeted me with smiles hugs and “you must be Brian’s daughter, you look just like him!” We felt like we were home away from home. We talked about family memories and family history, going through photo albums, talked about Sammy & Jessie, stories of my dad and their younger years, and I learned a lot about my grandfather John Munro (Jessie’s brother). These memories will always be cherished by myself and my family, all our love. 🕊️🕯️ - Posted by: Kristine Munro/Butler (2nd Cousin) on: Mar 09, 2025

Very nice Family, my Cousin Owen married into the Ateah Family. My Uncle Owen took me out to meet Sammy and Jessie when they still had their mink ranch. Also got to meet Larrette and Larry a few times. Eye opening for a 8 year old. RIP Larry - Posted by: Tom Hamilton (Friend) on: Mar 08, 2025

To the entire Ateah family, my heart breaks for you after reading about your dad's passing. Mrs. Ateah - you and Mr.Ateah had a relationship to be envious of! I've known you for more than 50 years and I always thought you two were the best of friends and a couple of cuties, a marriage and family that could rival any. Diana - I know you'll miss your partner so much. Kathy, Laura, Dean and Jason - I loved your Dad. He was such a lovely, lovely man. He always had time for me when I needed and I loved his laughter and teasing personality. I'm so sorry for your loss. Take pride in knowing he made an impression on everyone and I hope you all find peace on that. Much love. Dear Kathy, Laura and Family. I was saddened to learn about the passing of your father. I was fortunate enough to meet him, your mom and your brothers when you took me out to your cottage. Very happy times for me then and also when we were teaching colleagues. May everyone find peace and comfort in the cherished memories that you've shared with your father. Take care. - Posted by: Miranda (Friend) on: Mar 08, 2025

We only met Larry & Diana in 2021 but sure enjoyed our visits at their beautiful place in Victoria Beach. We were served Lebanese lunches, tasty! Looking around their home, Larry was a handy-man and their home reflected this. We will miss him and certainly offer our condolences to Diana, his family & friends. You are in our prayers. - Posted by: Marg Wahl/ Jerry Dennis (cousin) on: Mar 08, 2025
