Peacefully, Fred passed away February 13, 2025, at the Fred Douglas Lodge in Winnipeg, at the age of 90 years.
Left to cherish his memory are Fred's children, Michael "Max" (Tami) and Lori (Gary), grandchildren, Katrina and Tanner; great-grandson Damien, sister-in-law Diane, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Fred was predeceased by his parents, Edith and Gustav and his siblings, Rose ('Dimp'), Ruth (Marcel), Wilf (Edie), Irene (Gerry), and Jim.
"Freddy" was born on June 12, 1934, in Ridgedale, MB. He began working for CN Railway at age 16 and remained there until his retirement in 1990. Fred often had a toothpick in his mouth and a horse race sheet in his hand. His favourite pastimes during his working years and retirement were his soft ball and bowling leagues, swimming, betting on the horses and playing cards. He always looked forward to Chinese food with family and friends. Fred's TV was often tuned in to a baseball game with the volume too loud, especially for the Toronto Blue Jay games.
For many years, Fred regularly volunteered driving seniors to and from their medical appointments and assisting with their grocery shopping. Fred was fiercely independent until his physical health slowed him down in his last year.
Although his stay at the Lodge was brief, Fred's family would like to thank the staff for their care and compassion.
A Celebration of Life reception will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave.
