Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARY HERZOG
We are sad to announce the passing of our beloved mother, Mary Herzog, on the afternoon of Sunday, March 23, 2025, in the presence of four of her six children, a few weeks before her 97th birthday.
Mary was born in Whitemouth, Manitoba, on April 29, 1928, to Sara and Alexander Schmidt, one of six children. Mary will be deeply missed by her immediate family: children, Leona Herzog, Rosalie Schmidt (Larry), Christel Harrison (Robert) of Montana, Patsy Herzog (Dan MacNeil), Grace Ballard (Neil) and James Herzog of Vancouver; grandchildren, Alexandra Herzog, Tegan Taylor (Greg), Ansel Schmidt, Hanna Tintinger (Jon), Colin and Evan MacNeil; Melissa Ballard (Chris), Meaghan Ballard, Samantha Ballard (Eric), and great-granddaughter Claire Taylor.
Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband of 61 years, Harold Gilbert Herzog. Mary and Harold married on September 27, 1947, and were deeply committed to each other for their time together. They farmed until 1955 and then moved to Winnipeg where Mom was both a mother to her children and a business partner to Harold, together operating Herzog Landscaping for many years. Mom was a superb cook, took great pride in her massive vegetable garden, and spent many hours knitting and crocheting beautiful items for every family member. She took great pleasure in the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren: their educational achievements, personal interests and talents, and their careers.
In the days before her passing, her greatest joy was to speak about her children and how much she loved them. It seemed she was released from the constraints of her dementia for a short time.
The family would like to thank the compassionate caregivers at Golden West Centennial Lodge where she spent the past two years coping with the devastating effects of dementia.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 27, at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, Manitoba. Viewing time will be held at 9:00 a.m. with the service to follow.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations are made to the charity of your choice in her name.
