HERBERT MAKOWE
It is with very heavy hearts that we the family would like to announce the peaceful passing of Herbert Makowe at the age of 91 years. May his soul find eternal peace, as we remember his life and love, and trust in God’s loving embrace.
He will be lovingly remembered and missed by brother-in-law and sister-in-law Otto and Waltraud Grieger and nephews, Michael, Robert (Noreen), Peter (Leslie), niece Susanne Sanders (Peter) and grandnephews, Tanner and Connor. Also, his special niece Rosie Tasler and grandniece Tanya; nephews, Peter and Stephen Makowe and niece Angelica Makowe in British Columbia. Also, grandnieces, Denise, Angela and Nicole in Ontario; his sister Erika (Herbert Flade) and numerous nieces and nephews in Germany.
He was predeceased by his first wife Bertha Grieger (married 47 years), his second wife Johanna Koch (married 17 years), his parents, Johann and Anna (Tiedele), sisters, Alma Tasler and Klara Juerges and niece Gisela Kennett (Tasler).
Herbert was born on August 9, 1933, in Marienfeld, Kreis Binder Bessarabia (Romania). He graduated on October 3, 1952, as a Master carpenter in Helmstadt, Germany. He immigrated to Canada in 1953. His excellent carpentry skills provided him the opportunity to build beautiful pieces of furniture for his home, many family members, as well as, church, dentist office and Dubrovnik’s restaurant. He worked for Qualico Construction from 1954 to 1979. He was self-employed from 1980 to 1992.
Over the years Herbert overcame many health issues - hips, knees, head and eye surgeries. His faith and strong will helped him to move forward to his next adventure. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Cross from his arrival in Canada to the present day. While he was unable to attend church due to his declining health he enjoyed many hours listening and watching many church services on T.V.
Family gatherings were an important part of our families’ lives. Weekends were for celebrating any or all the different occasions we could think of. Food and conversations were the center of all of these celebrations. We have fond memories of going to church on Sundays and then to Bonanza when they had “all you can eat shrimp”. Family and friends gave him a run for the most shrimp eaten but Herbert always won. To this day we don’t know where he put them. We think management stopped having these special shrimp Sundays because of our families.
Herbert had the opportunity to travel widely with Bertha and Johanna - Europe, Cuba, USA, Hawaii and across Canada to visit family and friends. His love for camping and fishing found him on many holidays in Dinorwic, Ontario where his sister-in-law Frieda and brother-in-law Alfred ran a fishing camp. He loved coming to the farm to catch up on the latest happenings and bringing treats for the family dogs (I don’t know who enjoyed his arrivals more - the family or the dogs). They recognized the sound of the car on arrival and stood at the ready to accept any treats he had to offer them.
Our appreciation and special thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Emergency Department at the Grace Hospital for the caring and compassionate care they provided to Herbert and family. Blessings!
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 3 at Klassen Funeral Home, 1897 Henderson Hwy. at 1:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be Michael Grieger, Robert Grieger, Peter Grieger, Peter Sanders, Peter Hillius and Connor Sanders.
As an expression of sympathy, if family and friends so wish, donations may be made in Herbert’s memory to Heart and Stroke or Lutheran Urban Ministry.
