GILBERT LORNE STRACHAN

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, and friend who passed peacefully with his family by his side on March 26, 2025 at the Betel Home in Gimli.

Gil was predeceased by his parents, Wilbur and Ellen (nee Hogg), his wife Evelyn (nee Brygman), brother James, brothers-in-law, Bob Jones and Frank Siba, and sisters-in-law, Myrna Siba and Shirley Brygman-Jones. Gil leaves to mourn his sons, Paul (Marzia), David, and Corey, grandchildren, Matthew and Meghan, and Tre, Hailee and Lexi, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Gil worked in the composing departments of the Winnipeg Free Press, the Lethbridge Herald and the Ottawa Journal for many years before becoming an entrepreneur in food services as owner/operator of family restaurants. He took great pride in his community and served tirelessly as deputy mayor and municipal councillor of the Town of Gimli over several terms, and on innumerable local committees and local charities. He was an active member of the Viking Lodge in Gimli and the Lisgar Lodge in Selkirk, serving in several officer positions and in the Khartum Shrine. Gil enjoyed sports, good music and good food/drink shared with family and friends. He was an avid curler most of his life. Gil was a friendly, kind and giving soul and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

All are invited to attend a celebration of Gil's life to be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., at the Johnson Hall in the Waterfront Centre, Gimli, MB.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Betel Home in Gimli who provided Gil with such loving care in his later years.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in Gil's honour to the Khartum Shrine Patient Transportation Fund would be appreciated by the family.

Rest In Peace, Dad.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I believe I worked for Gil, many many years ago in Gimli! I remember him being very nice, and a patient boss! I worked for him in a couple of his restaurant and catering, gigs! I am glad he had a full life and can now rest. My sympathies go out to all of his family and friends! RIP Gil! C. Belanger - Posted by: Colleen belanger (Acquaintance) on: May 16, 2025

  • Gil and Eve were my neighbors for over 30 years. They first moved to a house down the block in Vesterland in the 80’s and then next door to us. Gil loved his vegetable garden and we spent a lot of time trading gardening tips. He always took an interest in our son Oliver and would give him a special bag at Halloween. Gil and Eve owned the Chicken Delight restaurant in Gimli and it was the favorite place for us teens to go for “coffee” in the 80’s and 90’s. Whether it was a plate of fries or chicken or to listen to the old jukebox we loved that little building. I had the privilege of caring for Gil at the Betel home and we would reminisce about the old days. Thanks for all the chicken dinners and neighborly love.
