Peacefully on March 27, 2025, our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Minnie East (Nanny) has left us for her new life.
She was predeceased by her mother, father and seven siblings, husband Gordon, and her special friend and travelling companion Maurice Fox.
Mother is survived by her three children, Garry (Birgit), Keith (Cindy) and Shelley, three grandchildren, Derek (Rebecca), Cody (Britney) and Brendan, five great-grandchildren, William, Gabriella, Brooklyn, Henry and Beckham.
Mother was born in the Ukraine, the youngest of eight children. She and her mother, father and seven siblings immigrated to Canada in 1929 and settled on a farm near Plumas, Manitoba.
Minnie loved to cook, bake and garden, which she enjoyed doing in her own home until June 2024. She cherished the fall time when she could pick the apples off her favorite apple tree. She enjoyed travelling and meeting new friends, cherishing and touching the lives of those around her. Friends and family enjoyed her stories and talking to her as her memory was sharp to the very end.
The family would like to thank the staff at Riverview Health Centre and the Grace Hospital, 4 South, for the care they provided to mother these last couple of months.
A “Come and Go” Celebration of Life will be held May 9, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue.
In lieu of flowers, donations made in her memory to a charity of your choice are appreciated.

My husband and I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Minnie when we bought the house next door to her in June 2023. We became fast friends over the fence. Minnie was always in her backyard, in her independent and stubborn ways, refusing any help as she tended to her garden. She was a pro gardener and I tried to pick up on any tips I could get from her. She was wise, kind, funny, strong, a true inspiration and absolute pleasure to be around. I was heartbroken when we learned she was selling her longtime home, but knew she would win over anyone she met in her next chapter of life at the care home. I would often joke that Minnie felt a bit like the grandmother I never got to grow up with, she was everything I would want in a grandmother that is for sure. Thank you so much Minnie for the wonderful memories and life lessons you shared with us in our year+ of living next door to one another. I will cherish that time forever. -Natasha and Kevin - Posted by: Natasha Taylor (Neighbour) on: Jun 19, 2025
