NELL (ANGELICA) CHIPKA

(nee PANKOW)

It is with great love and sadness that we announce the passing of Nell Chipka on April 3, 2025. With family at her side, Nell passed away peacefully at the tender young age of 108.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Lesley, granddaughters, Susan (Warren) and Stacey (Rob), grandson Ian, great-grandsons, Zack, Luke and Maxwell, great-great-grandsons, Forrest and Laken, daughter-in-law Gert and many nieces and nephews. Nell was predeceased by her loving husband John of 68 years, son Barry, granddaughter Leanne, brother Jim and sisters, Alice, Mary and Julia.

Nell grew up in the North End where she met the love of her life, John. They married in 1939 and eventually moved to the East Kildonan area where they lived for 51 years, raising two children. In her early years she worked at Eaton’s in the chocolate department, and later as a seamstress/sales at Bleet Ladies Wear. They loved to entertain and would host many parties with friends and family alike. She enjoyed sewing, embroidery and would make beautiful tote bags to fill her day. She loved her home, and in the summer would spend countless hours tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. She was tremendous in the kitchen, putting that extra touch of love into her cooking and baking. Her perogies were nothing shy of legendary!

To keep herself active in her later years she volunteered at Lions Manor, well into her 80s. The one thing she really enjoyed doing, in her 90s, was taking the bus to Polo Park, walk to the 2nd floor and have coffee at A&W…just because she could.

You’re an inspiration to us all and you will be greatly missed - till we meet again.

We would like to thank the staff at Holy Family Home for the love and care they gave to Nell during her stay, and especially for her birthday parties!

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, April 15 at 11:00 a.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, you may consider donating to a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Dear Ian And Gert, Aunt Nell was a treasure. You both were so wonderful in the support you provided to her. We will always treasure the memory of our perogy making lesson in her kitchen on Monroe. She was truly amazing, what other woman conquers her fear of heights by climbing a ranger tower and scrapes and paints her garage in her 90’s? With love and condolences, Jim, Jan, Elliott, Lauren, Welz, and Emery (Buck, too, as she always welcomed a visit from our dogs) - Posted by: Jim Trosky (Nephew) on: Apr 23, 2025

  • Condolences Gert & Ian for your loss. Nell was a lovely lady to my mom and me. Being neighbours I have many wonderful memories of the many times we got together and the talks and laughs we had. Vicki - Posted by: Vicki (Neighbour & friend) on: Apr 12, 2025
