BERTHA SHELVEY

(nee MILLER)

April 14, 1926 – April 21, 2025

Bertha Shelvey passed away peacefully on April 21, 2025. She transitioned into heaven after 99 years of living well. She firmly believed in 2 Corinthians 5: 7-8 which says: “For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.”

Bertha will be dearly missed by her children, Donna, Greg (Sandra), Judith (Hillar), and Bruce (Debi Jo), grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her brothers, Joe Miller and Edwin Miller, and numerous in-laws, nephews, and nieces. Bertha joins those who passed before her, including Ernest, her husband of 68 years, her parents (Henry and Natalia Miller), three sisters (Ida, Martha, and Adeline), and brothers (Daniel, Fred, and Arnold). Bertha was known for her commitment to Jesus, her love and care for others, and her dedication to prayer.

Bertha was a forerunner in women’s Christian ministry and held credentials with the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada. As a single woman, she pastored churches in Benito, MB and Altamont, MB, directed the Manitoba District Youth, and pioneered children’s vacation bible schools. She married Ernest in 1956 and together they co-pastored in King’s Park, Winnipeg, MB (1956-1964), Parkside and Shell Lake, SK (1964-1969), Gilbert Plains and Grandview, MB (1969-1973; 1979-1989), Virden, MB (1973-1975), Thompson, MB (1975-1979), and Rivers, MB (1989-1995. Although Bertha’s gift was Evangelism and she took great joy in introducing people to Jesus, she also had a heart for the disadvantaged and marginalized.

A graveside interment service will be held at Humesville Cemetery on April 24, 2025 (TODAY), at 1:00 p.m.

Bertha requested that memorial tributes be made directly to Manhattan Beach Camp (https://www.mbrc.ca/donate-1), a place where she had many fond memories.
