It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, brother and uncle.

Errol was predeceased by his beloved wife Joy in 2021.

Errol will be greatly missed by his daughter Arlene, sister Nerine Walker, sister-in-law Estelle Hendricks, many nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends. He was also predeceased by his brother Brian and nephew Haydn.

He was born in Port Elizabeth in South Africa and was the eldest child of Edgar and Olive (nee Windvogel). Joy and Errol arrived in Winnipeg from Cape Town on August 14, 1964.

Errol’s academic achievements include two Masters Degrees in Education here in Canada and also a Bachelor of Science in South Africa. He was an amazing athlete and played rugby at the university level. He was a teacher at Elmwood High School for many years and a long time member of and very involved at Transcona Memorial United Church.

A private family graveside was held at Transcona Cemetery where Errol was laid to rest with Joy.

  • I am deeply saddened to learn of Errol's passing. I was privileged to have taught with Errol for many years at Elmwood High School during which time we shared many lunches and conversations together. I knew him as a humble, gentle man with a friendly personality, subtle sense of humour and quick wit. I am thankful and honoured to have had Errol grace those years of my life. Deepest condolences to Errol's family. May his memory be a blessing. God bless. - Posted by: Dave Gillis (colleague) on: May 06, 2025

  • Since primary school, I had always preferred science over most of the other subjects that I had. Mr. Hendricks was among my favourite teachers of all time, and I went on to do a lot more STEM classes, graduating with a Mechanical Engineering degree. I went on to study economics, then law, afterwards becoming a Foreign Service Officer with the federal government, with my first overseas assignment being South Africa. It never clicked that Mr. Hendricks was from the Eastern Cape but that he is from the same province as where Nelson Mandela was born is not lost on me now. Thank you sir for instilling in me and furthering my lifelong love of science and the scientific method. - Posted by: Ken Wong (Student (class of 1984)) on: May 05, 2025

  • Mr. Hendricks was my science teacher when I was at Elmwood High School in the mid-eighties. He was an excellent teacher who instilled a love of science in me. He had a great sense of humour. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Grant Clark (former student) on: May 04, 2025

  • Mr. Hendricks not only taught us Science; he instilled respect, honour, humour and consequence of action. His humour was often subtle, satirical with his brand nuance. I have so many memories of his class but the one that comes up most; 90% of the class wouldn't settle or look at him so he sat down, took his two pointer sticks and a large cone of string and began to knit. Another time he said, "I'll only say this once, do not smell this tube of element, do not hold it near your face, that will go wrong". Course one person didn't hear that or just thought they'd disregard the warning. That student walked from Hendricks' desk toward their table at the back with their arm bent up putting the test tube about two inches from their nose. Halfway, whoosh they went down and needed a few minutes to come to, then a few more minutes to wave off their embarrassment. Mr Hendricks said, "Well I know now who thinks they knew better than me." He was one teacher who really made a difference for so many of us; thank you to his family for sharing him with us. I hope your memories of him hold strong to lighten your grief, may you find peace. - Posted by: Susan Keller (Student Class of '84) on: May 03, 2025

  • Errol was as cool as a cucumber, as a past student taught me chemistry and rugby at Elmwood, went back to teach there and was amazed that now I as a teacher had the opportunity to teach alongside such a classy guy, he served his time well in the time he had. He was a good man - Posted by: Gary Ostrowski (Friend) on: May 03, 2025

  • Mr. Hendricks was my science teacher at Elmwood High School in the late 1960’s. Many of us thought it was so cool he came from South Africa. He was a very good teacher and a kind man who managed unruly teenagers very effectively with his great sense of humour and the occasional well-aimed chalk eraser. I offer my sincere condolences to his daughter and the rest of his family. - Posted by: Darlene Lambert (new Mitchell) (Former student) on: May 03, 2025

  • My parents (Winston and Elizabeth Layne) were very good friends with Mr and Mrs Hendricks. I remember them attending many of my parents parties, and oh how the Capies could party. My sincere condolences on your loss. - Posted by: Jenny Morris (Family friend) on: May 03, 2025
