Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I just randomly looked up Prof Schilling as he was on my mind, which says a lot about the impact he had on me. He was my thermodynamics professor at the U of M in the early 2000’s. His classes were challenging for me, to put it mildly, but he was very approachable outside of the classroom and he helped thermodynamics to be one of my favorite subjects. I remember he would often step away from the chalkboard for a while and do a monologue to the class. He would stand to the side with his glasses in one hand and the way he would talk it was as if he was having a one on one discussion with each individual student. He cared about people. I wish I could go back in time to be his student again and truly appreciate what a great teacher he was. He was a kind and caring man and he will be missed. - Posted by: Richard Steinburg (Former student) on: Aug 28, 2025

  • Rudy always had a interesting comment or two when we met. Rudy was earlier than me at KKU but I understand that a son was born there. I believe that I was the last UM Engineering Professor to be at KKU. My grandson was also born there. So sorry to hear of Rudy's passing. He was a great guy! - Posted by: James Skeoch Townsend (UM Engineering colleague and Khon Kaen partner) on: May 16, 2025

  • Prof. Schilling was one of the kindest, most thoughtful members of the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club. He would ask anyone sitting around if they wanted a game, and I remember him bringing foreign students visiting the university to the tennis club, just to make them feel welcome. He emanated kindness, leaving a legacy on the tennis courts greater than any tournament championships or victories (notwithstanding the fact that he was a very capable player, despite his uncompetitive spirit). All of us who knew him remember him. Take care, - Posted by: Joseph Langan (Friend) on: May 11, 2025

  • Sorry to hear of Rudy's passing. I always enjoyed my interactions with Rudy either at the Faculty of Engineering, our discussions on the bus while commuting, or playing tennis with him, or just passing each other and having a quick chat about the state of the world. - Posted by: Kevin STEWART (Co-worker) on: May 10, 2025

  • Rudy was a genuine ambassador of good will kindness and charm. He always found the good in everyone. He was loyal and loving to his family. They were his world! I will not forget the kindness he extended to me and everyone who came into his life. He was an exceptional person in every way! He gave much, loved much and lived life to the fullest. Lets follow his great example of how to live the best life given us. - Posted by: Susan Loeppky (Friend) on: May 10, 2025
