Lois was called to her eternal rest and died peacefully at the Grace Hospital on Mother’s Day, May 11, 2025, with her children at her side.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Sheila (Doug), Douglas, Lisa (Curtis), Heather (Brian), David (Cathy), and by her grandchildren Allison (Darin), Laura (Cory), Stephen (Michelle), Jaclyn (Andrew), Ashley, Emma (Ryan), Veronica (Brady), Julia (Branden), Dougie (Sophie), Kristine, and by her great-grandchildren, Danica, Dax, Colton, Keaton, Kingston, Violet, Delilah, Audrey, Olive and Imogen, and special friend, Bonnie.
She was predeceased by her parents Olga Boddy and Edward Harkness, and her in-laws Otto and Louise Domke, Dr. Oscar Domke, her husband of 63 years, brothers Roy Harkness (Betty) and Glen Harkness (Jean), sister-in-law Ruth Ebbeling (Reginald), and nephews Ross Harkness and Grant Harkness.
Lois was raised on the farm at Beaver, Manitoba attending the local one room school, and later, schooled in McGregor. She was so proud of her farm and rural heritage. She went on to university at United College in Winnipeg.
She met Dad on a blind date and they were married on December 28, 1951, and had a wonderful life together. She was the “Mrs. Doctor” behind the man through his 58 years of family practice and was as committed to the care of his patients as he was. Together they built a cottage at Delta Beach, Manitoba, their “little piece of heaven on earth”, where so many memories were made. They travelled and cruised extensively; St. Pete’s Beach in Florida was a favourite. They cherished many friendships with neighbours, church family, the theatre group, and later at the Wellington, and then for mom at the Brightwater.
Lois embraced her life with love and laughter, with praise and prayer. She was known for her quick wit, intelligence and sense of humour. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt. She delighted in her family’s every accomplishment and their commitments to the health and education, management, law, engineering, and helping professions.
Lois was steadfast in her faith, and was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer for over 70 years. She was especially grateful for Pastor Shaun Mannings’s ministrations during the last few months of her life.
The family is thankful for the care she had from her family physician, Dr. Angela Reimer, for guidance from other medical colleagues, and for the support from nurses, and care workers, for allowing our mother to live independently, with the grace and dignity she so righteously deserved.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at 11:00 am at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, corner of Academy Road and Wellington Crescent, with a reception to follow and private family burial at Chapel Lawn.
Donations may be made in Lois’ honour to the Red Cross. (It was one of her first jobs) or to Canadian Lutheran World Relief.

We will all remember this gregarious lady as our Delta neighbour. Throughout the years she was a generous and enthusiastic host, and an initiator of lively conversations. She always took great interest in all the generations at the beach. We will remember the twinkle in her eye and her wonderful sense of fun. There will only ever be one “Lois “: rest in peace. - Posted by: Heather (Stone) and Ken Klippenstein (Friends) on: Jun 01, 2025

I would like to send condolences to Dr Sheila & her Family for the loss of her Mother. I didn’t know Lois Domke, but after reading her tribute/obituary, I could see some of the wonderful qualities that were written about Mrs. Domke passed down to her Family, in this case Dr Sheila Domke. So sad for your loss. May your heart hold all the wonderful memories 💙 Anne Gross - Posted by: Anne Gross (Friend of Dr Sheila Domke) on: May 20, 2025

Loved your mom. She was the most gracious and kind person, always a smile, and she has passed on all her goodness to her wonderful family. Thinking of you all, Bev & Terry. - Posted by: Bev Galbraith & Terry Minuk (Friends) on: May 19, 2025

On the many visits to the office, Lois would be there to geet everyone with a smile and time for a chat. My two children were born around the same time as Lisa's and she told me that watching them at the office gave her an idea of the threshholds her grandchildren were making. I hold that memory dear to me. She was truly a lovely lady. - Posted by: Terry-Lynn Champagne (Patient and freind) on: May 18, 2025

I remember Lois fondly. We had many phone chats in her later years. She had a sense of humour right to end. We have many memories at Delta. Mom and Dad had a cottage right down from the Domke cottage. We were continually back and forth visiting with many laughs. My condolences to all the family. I will be thinking of you on Tuesday. - Posted by: Jane MacDiarmid (Cousin) on: May 18, 2025

Aunts often play a meaningful role in our lives. Aunt Lois was that person with her lively conversations about life, hosting wonderful Christmas celebrations, fun times at Delta cottage, receiving humorous touching Christmas cards and in her later years connecting by telephone to hear first hand how things were going! She was a truly an extraordinary woman and was admired by everyone who knew her. She was a special Aunt to me and my family. Our deepest sympathy and prayers to you and your family. Aunt Lois will deeply be missed. - Posted by: Howard, Shirley And Family (Aunt) on: May 18, 2025

Our family grew up on Pawnee Bay, where the Domke family also resided. The common ground was that Mr. Domke was a Doctor as well as our father. I would say that as I grew up, we had a lot of respect for the Domkes as the number of Medical Practitioners evolved throughout your family. We have fond memories of those days, and about your family. I am sending hugs to you all on the loss of your Mother, yet when you think about all the years between " her dash", you were lucky to have her in your life for so long. - Posted by: Laurie Gydé (Family friend) on: May 17, 2025
