Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryVIOLA CHRISTINE JOHNSON
Our beloved Aunt, Viola Christine Johnson, died peacefully at age 90 on April 30, 2025, surrounded by family. She was predeceased by her parents, Laufey and Jonas Johnson, and siblings, George, Daniel, and Gloria.
Viola attended Daniel McIntyre Collegiate and the University of Manitoba. After touring Europe, she joined Great West Life as a mortgage analyst, where her kindness, humour, and strong work ethic defined her 30-year career. An ardent feminist, she believed deeply in equality and financial independence for women.
Like most Icelanders, Viola delighted in discussing genealogy – past and present – almost as much as she loved reading. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, all of whom cherished her deeply. Her bold, intricate, and beautifully made quilts adorn their beds and walls around the world, linking the generations.
A family gathering will be held in Gimli this summer to celebrate Vi with stories.
Special thanks to the caring staff at Grace Hospital, the MAID team, and Thorvaldson’s Care Centre - particularly Jocelyn and Karen.

Viola’s beauty was in her eyes. A straight gaze, vivid, strong, honest and deep. She was an extraordinary woman. She will live forever in my heart. ♥️ Wendy Camp Ottawa. - Posted by: Wendy Camp (Friend) on: May 23, 2025

Viola and I worked in the same department at GWL. Viola was always willing to pass on her vast knowledge and did so with great enthusiasm. Viola had a wicked sense of humour and in addition, great pride in her family. Please accept my sincere condolences at this very sad time. - Posted by: Denise (LeBlanc) Elias (Co-worker GWL) on: May 18, 2025

My husband, John, and I worked with Viola at Great-West Life throughout the 1970's. She was a wonderful role model for a young woman just starting out in the "real" world...so smart, so knowledgeable, and so much fun. Please accept our sincere condolences. Pat (Newman) and John Hodgert. - Posted by: Pat Hodgert (co-worker/friend) on: May 17, 2025

My sincere condolences to Viola’s family. Viola and I worked in the same mortgage section for many years. Viola was well liked by all and was a source of vast knowledge for those of us in the mortgage/real estate area. She was known for her wicked sense of humour and her quiet but noticeable pride of her family. Rest well Viola. - Posted by: Denise Elias (Former Co-worker at GWL) on: May 17, 2025
