It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our brother, uncle and friend, Glen Swifte.
Glen was predeceased by his parents John Allan (Al) Swifte in 2006, Bernice Swifte in 2020 and Uncle, Garfield Day in 2021.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his sisters Donna McElroy and Colleen Swifte, Cousin, Kim Rozecki, Nephew and nieces, Shaun McElroy, Erika Blanchard (Aaron), Erin Roy (Justin) and honourary niece, Hannah Crawford.
He was very close with and was the best uncle ever to his great nieces and nephews, Gage Harper, Jaxon Blanchard, Jessie-Lynn Blanchard, Arlo Roy and Abby Blanchard. He will also be sadly missed by his former colleagues and many friends.
Glen was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on April 29, 1959, and touched many lives during the following 66 years. Glen grew up in River Heights and attended Brock Corydon Elementary School, River Heights Junior High and Kelvin High School where he was active with the Kelvin Choir. Through that, he became a member of the award-winning Bass Clef Chorus and Better Half Singers. In addition to taking small parts in numerous operas and operettas at the Winnipeg Concert Hall, Glen sang for the opening of the Winnipeg Convention Centre in 1975 and performed in Jerusalem on Christmas Eve in 1979 with the Jerusalem Symphony.
Glen was a world traveller and had a wealth of knowledge about other countries. He formed friendships around the globe while travelling to places such as Iceland, Finland, Israel, Russia, Ireland and England.
After graduating from high school, Glen obtained his Business Administration Degree from Red River College which started him on a career path that began with banking and ended with him following in his father’s footsteps into the insurance industry. Glen excelled during a 26-year career as Vice President & Senior Broker at Aon. He retired on December 31, 2018, with a well-attended and heartfelt send-off dinner from numerous colleagues who were also “family” to him. They say Glen was never too busy to help anyone and always made himself available to assist, coach, and mentor more junior staff. He was considered one of the best wordings experts in Canada, and Aon colleagues throughout the country would seek his advice. Glen had excellent relationships with colleagues and clients, understanding the value of nurturing these relationships. He cared deeply about his colleagues and was truly loved by everyone in the office. Glen was also one of the most technically strong property brokers in the country, and likely could have taught several of the insurance courses, despite not holding formal insurance designation(s).
After his retirement, Glen sold his condo in the Ashdown Warehouse and moved into Fort Garry Place. He loved living downtown and enjoyed walking to almost anywhere he wanted to go. He also took over the family cottage in Matlock Manitoba and immensely enjoyed his summers there.
Glen was always thinking of others and was constantly surprising his family with unexpected gifts from his numerous shopping trips and adventures. His exceeding generosity, care and empathy will never be forgotten.
Glen’s family extends a warm invitation to join us in a celebration of his life on Thursday, June 12 at 2:00 p.m. at Canad Inns Polo Park 1405 St. Matthews Avenue, Ambassador Room 1.
Losing Glen is a void in all of our lives that can never be filled.
