HELEN WYLIE

October 17, 1944 – May 8, 2025

With immense sadness that we announce that our mother Helen died Thursday May 8, 2025 at the age of 80.

Helen will be remembered by her children, Linda (Andrew) and Norman, and her grandchildren, Luke and Samantha. She is survived by three siblings, Gordon, Margaret and Mary, and many nieces and nephews. Our mom was predeceased by her adored mother, Helen Ross.

Our mom (nee Helen Ross) was born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland, the eldest daughter in a family of eight.

In 1967 our parents emigrated to Winnipeg in search of a better life. Mom was a born worker who would try her hand at anything. She bluffed her way into her first job in Winnipeg at the International Inn, then worked at Rossmere Country Club. Helen then was a cashier at Boyle’s Budget Basket. Following her divorce in 1991, Helen began her own successful business as a house cleaner.

Helen was a friend to anyone and everyone. She loved meeting and talking to people and seemed to know someone wherever she went. Mom had numerous Scottish friends and socialised with many of them at the Prince Edward Legion. She loved parties including her Ladies Nights, her annual Boxing Day party, and meetings for the Knit Wits, a knitting group where not much knitting actually took place.

She began playing softball in her forties in Transcona and was voted most sportsmanlike player and was CKY’s Sports Star of the Week. Helen later took up curling and bowling during the winter months. She finally had to give up playing sports after suffering heart failure a few years ago, but continued to watch her beloved Celtic Football Club play early Saturday mornings.

A celebration of Helen’s life will take place on Thursday, May 22 at 4:00 p.m. at the Prince Edward Legion 81, 300 Trent Ave, East Kildonan. Please bring your favourite memories and stories about our mom, Helen.

  • Sincerest condolences. Your Mom, and my Mom, Lee Smith, shared a great friendship throughout the years. My Son and I had the pleasure of spending time with Helen. Will be missed by us most certainly. - Posted by: Clay Smith. (Friend) on: Aug 19, 2025

  • Helen, I enjoyed talking and socializing with you about football and Celtic. Rest in peace. Hail, hail - Posted by: Mike L (Fellow Celtic fan) on: May 20, 2025

  • Heartfelt condolences to Linda, Norman and families during this oh so difficult time. We've been neighbors of Helen's for many years and grew very close to her. Often we would have her over for lunch and a hot cup of tea, and she'd tell us so many anecdotes of her life history and favorite topics. She could be fiery! We shared many interests, especially sports. Of course the Jets And Blue Bombers topped the list, but she was a huge horseracing fan and naturally pro soccer (football) too. She told us about all of her own sports exploits on the softball field, the bowling lanes and at the curling rink. Then there was her summer trailer near Beausejour, where she hosted us for a day of sun, fun, bingo, BBQ and of course some wobbly pops! She also loved to have front yard tea parties at her place with neighbors and friends. Being on her own, we'd often drop in to help with her day to day issues, whether it be lawn, snow, water, light fixtures, that darn back door, or those new TVs with so many trick settings! Helen would always have gifts for us at Christmas time too. So often that meant her kitchen delights including a sweet and sticky cake that cannot be duplicated! She truly was like family to us. Lately, our conversations turned to health, hospitals and doctors, but she'd constantly be more concerned with our health than her own. So every time you sip on a cup of tea, please think of Helen! Rest in Peace! - Posted by: David and Monique Coffell (close friends) on: May 18, 2025

  • Helen would come to my house to watch the Celtic games and she would natter on and on through the entire time, and then she'd ask if I was mad at her because I didn't say much, then I would say that's because you didn't give me a chance to get a word in edgewise, we had a lot of good times and laughs, she was my best-est wee pal and I'll miss the wee chatter box immensely. Rest in peace Helen, you were deeply loved. - Posted by: Jim Doherty (Friend) on: May 17, 2025

  • To Helen's children, I am very sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. She was one tough lady, fearless, and she spoke of her family often. She was a star in the Transcona Mape Leaf baseball league for her inclusiveness, her sense of fair play, and her fun-loving spirit. We were all so happy for her when she was honored as a sports star. May your memories sustain you until you meet again. Condolences - Posted by: Marty Downie (Baseball acquaintance) on: May 17, 2025
