Peacefully and surrounded by her loving family, Hazel aged 88, passed gracefully into the arms of God at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre on May 14, 2025.
She was predeceased by her husband Bernard, their son Brian, her sister Rosemary (Bill) Day, her brothers-in-law Walter (Louise), Mike (Katherine), Joseph, Edward (Lillian) and Melvin and several nephews.
She leaves behind her brother Ray, with whom she shared regular daily texts and nightly check-in calls. Her "One and Only" daughter Mary, her sons Douglas (N. Darlene), Richard, Robert (Christine), George, David (Karen), Gordon, many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.
Hazel was born to Mary and Gonzague Poirier, the middle child of 3, growing up surrounded by many relatives in close proximity at 410 Strathnaver.
She graduated from St. Mary's Academy. Hazel met her soon to be life-long companion and husband Bernie of close to 60 years, shortly afterwards, while working as a waitress at the Salisbury House in Selkirk. In 1958, she and Bernie built themselves a home in Selkirk, where they raised their 8 children.
They fulfilled their dream of moving to the country in 1981.Together, they hosted many family gatherings over the years, with Hazel insisting she make her delicious perogies and cabbage rolls. Hazel was very active in the church and community. She played the organ at the Notre Dame Church for over 25 years. She was a member of the Catholic Women's League, sung in the church choir, and enjoyed Christmas caroling during the holiday season. She enjoyed bowling, curling, Whist, Tai Chi, knitting, crocheting, as well oil painting over the years. Morning coffee with the gang at McDonald's was one of her favorites.
Hazel spent her last months in the Red River Care Facility and was happy to eat her meals with her life-long friend, Olga Neskar.
Hazel was a strong, charitable and very loving person, always looking at the best side of people and doing what she could to make others feel welcomed and comfortable in her presence. She was loved and will be missed dearly by everyone who knew her.
A Funeral Mass by Father Gerald Langevin & Father Michael Wollbaum will be held on Friday, May 23, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Notre Dame Catholic Church on 269 Jemima St. Selkirk, MB. Interment will follow at the Notre Dame Cemetery. Join us for a light lunch in the Church Hall afterward.
If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or charity of your choice.
Hazel will live forever in the hearts of her many family and friends.
