DOUGLAS BARRY PAULSEN

March 31, 1959 - May 5, 2025

Farewell to our father, husband, son, brother and friend.

Doug is survived by his wife Roselle, sons, Rob and Luke (Kyra) and grandson Myles; his siblings, Heather Stiles (Bob) and Ken Paulsen, and mother Anne Paulsen, as well as five nieces and nephews and their partners and children. He is predeceased by his father Barry.

Doug was born in Winnipeg, MB on March 31, 1959. He was described by his mother as the perfect baby - always happy and content. He also loved to explore the mechanics of everything. Anne would find him taking apart and putting back together all manner of small appliances and gadgets. After living in Brandon, Doug spent most of his childhood in Dauphin alongside his brother Ken and little sister Heather (whom the boys loved to tease). The boys spent many years playing hockey formally and for fun with friends. Doug’s boys did the same. Doug loved a good time with friends and made many of them for life. The man of few words could be a very fun guy.

Following high school, Doug moved to Montreal and attended McGill University to study prosthetics and orthotics. This led to his career in first helping adults, then specifically children at Rehabilitation Centre for Children, finishing his career as Director of Rehab Engineering / Prosthetics & Orthotics / Mechanical Design & Service. He had a wonderful way with his young patients and dedicated his work to helping children.

Doug loved hockey, golf, baseball, football, curling, hunting and fishing. He was an enthusiastic participant in sports, as well as a dedicated fan.

Doug’s pride and joy were his sons. He loved to play on the floor with them as little guys and spent many hours coaching his boys' sports teams, watching them at local rinks; and he loved a hockey road trip. If one of the Paulsen boys was on the ice or field, Doug would be there. They all golfed together at the cabin for many years.

From May 2023, Doug experienced several strokes and was cared for at Riverview Health Centre, then at home by Roselle, and finally at Vista Park Lodge. Doug battled during the last few years of his life. His family is grateful for all of those who were involved in caring for him.

He passed away peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg; and we thank the staff there, as well as the caring staff at Vista Park.

A private tribute will be held for immediate family.

Should you wish to make a donation in Doug's honour, please consider Heart & Stroke Foundation and Rehab Centre for Children Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (19 entries)

  • Our sincere condolences in the passing of Doug. He made a huge difference in the life of my son who was born missing an arm. That was 40 years ago and he was the same gentle, caring Dr from Day 1. Doug ensured he could play all sports with the correct prosthetic, including enabling his ability to play for Team Canada on the Standing Amputee Team bringing home numerous gold medals! We will never forget him! He was outstanding and his life was cut too short. - Posted by: Beverley Zboril (parent of a client of Doug) on: May 27, 2025
