URSULA ANNA EMILIE HARTEL

November 30, 1932 – April 22, 2025

With heavy hearts and deep love, we announce the passing of our beloved Ursula at age 92, on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at Kildonan Personal Care Home, Winnipeg. Ursula was predeceased by her husband, Edmund, her parents, Emma and Wilhelm and her siblings, Gustav, Horst, Edith and Gertrud. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her daughter Birgit (Norm), many friends and extended family in Germany.

Ursula spent her early life years in Woldenberg, Pomerania, Germany. She was a survivor of many atrocities of WW2 and several years after the end of the war, she met her husband, Edmund. In 1955, they left Germany to start their new life together in Winnipeg.

Ursula’s entire life was dedicated to her family, to her friends and to helping others.

Ursula volunteered for 18 years at Princess Margaret School in the River East Transcona School Division. She loved children and they loved her. She got great satisfaction when she saw their smiling faces, knowing the time she spent with them was meaningful. It was especially heart-warming when decades later, she would unexpectedly meet some of them and they remembered her and thanked her.

Ursula also thrived during the 15 years she volunteered as a Goldwing Ambassador with the Winnipeg Airport Authority. She met so many amazing people during this time and made lasting friendships. But Ursula’s gift of giving of herself, of her time, did not stop there. We cannot forget her 12 fulfilling years as a volunteer at The St. Boniface Hospital.

Ursula was an amazing cook and thoroughly enjoyed entertaining. She was known for her exquisite baking skills and everyone loved her wonderful tortes.

Above all, Ursula loved her family and friends and shared many happy moments with them. We will all remember her infectious smile and know how much she cherished the many special celebrations with each of us.

Ursula was and will remain a beacon of light, of love and of hope. Her aura will continue to be felt by the many lives she touched.

Our heartfelt thanks to all staff at St. Norbert PCH as well as Kildonan PCH for their care of Ursula during a most difficult time during her declining health.

A Celebration of Life service honouring Ursula will take place on May 27, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home and Cemetery, 4477 Main Street. Interment and a private family gathering will take place at a later date.

Flowers are graciously declined. Should you wish, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Ursula, was one of the nicest people you could ever meet. She was a client of mine at the bank. Over the many years that I got to know her, Ursula confided her experiences during the war to me. They made me cry at times, yet she always had a smile and kind word. She will truly be missed by all who knew her. She is now an angel ,who has truly earned her wings. To her daughter my sincere condolences, I was privileged to have met your Mother. Rest In Peace Ursula - Posted by: Jutta Dreilich (Friend) on: Jun 01, 2025

  • People meeting this lovely lady would not necessarily realize the heroic life she had led. Her experiences during and following World War 2 would astonish most. Her story is powerful and like something out of a novel. In her life in Winnipeg she contributed in so many ways to her new country. Canada and Winnipeg were so enriched that she and Eddie chose to live and raise their beautiful daughter here. Farewell Ursula. You will be missed. - Posted by: Laura Hawkins (Friend) on: May 23, 2025

  • I met Ursula when we were both volunteers at the airport. Ursula was a strong but quiet, kind, soft spoken and humble lady who just wanted to help others. Her respectful attitude, friendly manner and knowledge made her a role- model for the Goldwing program. I have such good memories of her. Sending sympathy and hugs to her family. • Dear Birgit--I volunteered with your Mom at the St. Boniface Hospital for many years. Also, my brother volunteered as a Gold Wing Ambassador for several years along with your Mom. Ursula was so warm and bubbly and the most welcoming individual. God speed. We are truly blessed. - Posted by: Donna Glowasky (associate volunteer) on: May 21, 2025
