The family of Matt Shwaluk is saddened to announce his passing on Wednesday May 21, 2025 at Fairview Personal Care Home, at the age of 99 years.
Matt was born in Olha, Manitoba, the youngest of seven children to pioneer parents Peter and Michalena (née Hrycak) Shwaluk, first-generation Ukrainian Canadians. In 1946, he married Lena Peech, and together they raised two children, Diane and John. They farmed in the Vista and Oakburn areas until retiring to Brandon in 1979.
Even after retiring from farming, Matt continued to stay active, working as a school bus driver and later, alongside Lena, performing custodial duties at the Brandon Clinic. Following Lena’s sudden passing in 1986, Matt later remarried Anne Peech, with whom he shared many years until her passing in 2013.
Matt was predeceased by both his children, all his siblings, his grandson Terry, and both of his wives. He leaves to mourn his son-in-law, Bill Salyn, grandsons Jeff and Brad Salyn (Joleen), granddaughter-in-law Deb Salyn, and great-grandchildren Jackson, Matthew, Piper, Falena, Rowan, and Bennett Salyn.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the management and staff of Fairview PCH for the exceptional care and compassion provided to Matt over the past four years.
Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 927 Assiniboine Avenue, on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at 1:00 pm. Celebrant will be Rev. Fr. Yaroslav Strukhlyak. Interment will follow at the Brandon Cemetery.
