LEONARD WILLIAM SCHLEINING

September 23, 1929 - May 20, 2025

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Leonard “Len” Schleining on May 20, 2025.

Len was married to Joan, the love of his life, for sixty wonderful years until her passing in 2012. Together they raised three children: Lynn (Dwight), Calvin (Diane), and Lori. He was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren: Lindsay (Dave), Lisa, Carly, Derek, and Corey, and a beloved great-grandfather to Amelia and Ben.

Len is survived by his brother Bob (Vera) of Toronto and was predeceased by his two sisters, Elsie (Bill) and Dorothy (Jim). He is also survived by his brother-in-law Glen (Angela), sister-in-law Diane (Charlie) and is predeceased by his brother-in-law Tom. He is also fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews.

He grew up on St. Johns Avenue in Winnipeg, just across the street from his lifelong friend, Harold Granke. As a young man, Len excelled in many sports and later developed a passion for coaching lacrosse. He also became an accomplished bowler and a keen golf enthusiast.

Len began his career at Silverwood Dairy before joining the City of Winnipeg as a Health Inspector. He was later promoted to Assistant Chief of the department, a role in which he served with pride and integrity until his retirement.

Len and Joan began their family life in Elmwood, where they rented a house before purchasing a cottage at Grand Beach — well before owning a home in the city. The family’s most treasured memories were made at the cabin, surrounded by friends, love and laughter.

Upon retirement, Len and Joan made their lake life permanent with a home in White Sands. There, they joined the Senior Scene and made many dear friends. They also cherished their winters spent in Palm Springs.

Faith was an important part of Len’s life. He and Joan were active members of Grace Lutheran Church, and Len continued to volunteer with the Trinity Food Pantry. He especially enjoyed the fellowship of the men’s breakfast group.

In his final years, Len found great joy in the company of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

May his memory be a blessing.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the staff at Middlechurch Home for the exceptional care they provided to our father. A special thank you to the B2 unit for their compassion and dedication. Len especially treasured the Friday afternoons spent at the Middlechurch pub, singing along to all the old tunes.

A celebration of Len’s life will be held on Wednesday, June 4th at 1:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 211 Kimberly Avenue.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
