DONALD BROWN HUNTER

1934 - 2025

Donald Brown Hunter of Winnipeg passed away peacefully at Seven Oaks Hospital in his 92nd year, after a full and happy life, on May 25 ,2025. He will be joining the love of his life Sylvia, who predeceased him in 2023, just after their 68th wedding anniversary. He had missed her every day since.

Much loved father of Lesley, Jim (Gaylene) and Mark (Lisa). Cherished grandfather of Curtis (Melissa), Bryan (Ashlynn), Danielle and Austin (Micheala), as well as his 5 great grandchildren.

Survived also by his sister Shirley and brother Bruce (Nancy).

Predeceased by his brother Leslie (Ann), his sister Louise (Jim), brother-in-law Harold and beloved son in law Tim.

Don was born on the family farm in Hespeler Ontario on March 26, 1934, to the late William and Jean (nee Brown) Hunter. Don spent his young and early adult life working the family farm, but health concerns demanded a different environment. And in 1962, Don and Sylvia and their two young children packed up their belongings and left family and friends to move to unknown city of Winnipeg. And thus, their great adventure began. In Winnipeg they put down roots and completed their family. Don started a career as a long-haul owner/operator with Reimer Express Lines. A Job he did with pride until he retired after 44 years and over 4 million miles on the road in 2006. His family can attest that he continued to wear his uniform with pride well beyond retirement.

Once retired every year Don drove their motorhome with Sylvia as his co-pilot to winter in Yuma. There Don showed a fun side. He ran bingos, park events and played Santa every year and Sylvia was his elf.

In his latter years, Don was very grateful to have found as new home and community for himself and Sylvia in Kiwanis Court. The staff and residents were like his family. The family would also like to thank the team at the Seven Oaks Hospital for their care and compassion during his last days.

Don’s ashes will be interred at the Memory Gardens at St. Andrews Anglican Church at a private family service at a time in the future.

In lieu of flowers. Donations in his memory can be made to Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts of Winnipeg.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • My father, the late Tom Wiebe was one of Don’s dispatchers for many years. Dad, a driver himself in earlier times, had the highest respect for Don and often talked about him and the high standards he set. - Posted by: Kelvin Wiebe (Acquaintance) on: Jul 01, 2025

  • I will always remember Don as a cherished presence and devoted regular at the Wellness. Don’s daily visits were a testament to his commitment to health, connection and routine. His warm and friendly nature made him well-liked by all. Don stayed sharp and curious, keeping up with the latest technology. Each year, after winters spent in Yuma, he would return with thoughtful gifts for friends -a gesture that spoke volumes of his generosity and thoughtfulness. And every year before they left, Sylvia would come to our coffee group and share her beautiful handmade crafts with everyone. A beautiful couple indeed! Don’s passing is sad for me, but happy in that he and Sylvia are together again. - Posted by: Katy Dann (friend) on: May 31, 2025

  • I remember Don from our Reimer Express days. He was always cheerful and definitely loved working as a long distance driver. He always had great stories to share from his numerous road trips. Don was a very safe and conscientious driver and highly regarded by many of his colleagues. My sincere condolences to his family. - Posted by: Marion Krause (Colleague) on: May 31, 2025
