SUSAN ASUNCION VERHAEGHE
With profound sadness and broken hearts, we announce the passing of our dear wife, mother, and lola, Susan Asuncion Verhaeghe (née Fontanilla).
She was predeceased by her parents, Luciano and Estefania Fontanilla, her brother Jesus, and her sister Angela. She leaves behind her ever-loving and devoted husband, Keith Verhaeghe, her children, Stephanie (Taylor) and Stephen (Jennifer), and her four sweet grandchildren, Rafael, Renato, Luen and Río. She is also survived by her sisters, Lydia, Vivian, and Veronica, and her brother Luciano Junior, as well as many nieces, nephews, and her brothers- and sisters-in-law, who will also bear the burden of missing her.
Susan moved from the Philippines in the early 1970s to make a new life for herself and find opportunities abroad. She arrived in Canada in 1972 and met her husband two years later, and after a whirlwind romance, they married a few short months thereafter in 1974. Last December they recently reached an amazing milestone of 50 years married!
Susan was well known for her big smile that would light up a room and welcome you in. She was gregarious by nature and with her love of cuisine she welcomed all her family and friends to her table at her house and Lac du Bonnet cabin, which she helped build alongside her husband.
Susan’s presence will be tremendously missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Many thanks to the caring and supportive staff at the Brentwood care home in Calgary, where several team members went above and beyond their duties to always make sure she was comfortable. The family is grateful for the wonderful care she received.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Doyle’s Funeral Home in Carman, Manitoba on Friday, June 27, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. The interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery and then a reception will be at Doyle’s.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either:
· Intercare Brentwood Care Centre. Please place a note at the bottom, for Morrison Unit – Recreation. Cheques can be mailed to the Intercare Corporate Group Inc. Calgary Regional Corporate Office 501 – 5920 MacLeod Trail SW Calgary, AB T2H 0K2 (unfortunately, tax receipts cannot be provided), or
