GLENN BROWN

Glenn Rupert Brown passed away peacefully following a short stay in hospital at the age of 94.

Glenn was predeceased by his wife of 64 years Fran Brown, his parents Orville Rupert and Norma Ethelyn (Stonehouse) Brown, his younger brother Gordon and his sisters Alice Larson, Carol Brown and Evelyn Watt.

Glenn is survived by his children Gordon Brown (Mona) Aaron and Meagan, Stan Brown (Carolyn) Ericka and Nicholas, Sharyn Last (Richard) Michael and Dustin, Terri Webber (Harold) Kody and Dylan, Ross Brown, Nancy Clarke (Perry) and sisters Beverley Thompson and Marion Witoszkin. He also leaves his much-loved great grandchildren. Family was always important to Glenn. He celebrated 95 consecutive Christmases at the house at the farm.

Glenn was born in Carman and attended Lone Star school and Sperling school. He also attended the agriculture college of the University of Manitoba He started farming at a young age after the passing of his father and remained a farmer at heart all his life.

Glenn met a young teacher named Frances Fleming and they began their 64 years together in 1952. They raised 6 children on an often tight budget and but lived busy and active lives. Glenn participated in school board, church board, local cooperatives, activities in the community and the Cubs, Scouts and Venturers in Sperling. Family road trips were part of every summer. Starting with tents and then the truck camper he designed and built in a corner of the shop one winter. Later it was the Boler camper they took on their travels.

Glenn was handy in the shop. Whether it was wood working building cabinets, plant stands or wooden toys that the grand and great grandchildren favoured over store bought toys, or laying a bead with the arc welder to make or repair something for the farm, he was ready and able to find a way to create.

Dad and Mom enjoyed travel destinations across Canada as well as outside the country including New Zealand, England and Scotland, Costa Rica, Alaska, Mexico, Hawaii, Florida and Germany. These trips were often with family and friends.

In 1980, when the time came to transition the farm to the next generation, Glenn and Fran moved out of the wind in the bottom of the valley to the Pembina Escarpment near Roseisle. There they created a park-like setting around their new house in the middle of the bush which they named “Ayre Brae”. Glenn’s “south garden”, cutting firewood, mowing grass, creating a toboggan run, clearing walking paths and maintaining the long driveway up from the road kept him active and fit. The goats and the horse kept Glenn a farmer at the “Hill” as well.

Glenn and Fran made their final move to Meadowood Estates where they were surrounded by friends old and new. A special thanks to the Meadowood community for the support shown to Glenn.

The family wishes our thanks to the staff at Carman Memorial Hospital for the care he received during his stay. Thanks to Doyles Funeral Home for helping with arrangements.

At Glenn’s request, a private memorial service will be held. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
