DOROTHY HASSAN

December 29, 1934 - June 8, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother Dorothy on June 8, 2025 at the age of 90.

Dorothy will be deeply missed by her daughters, Suzan (Mark Edwards) and Leyla. She was predeceased by her sister Jean Booth as well as her aunt and uncle Doris and Bob Armstrong. We are comforted by memories of her love, and knowing she has finally been reunited with her husband Mehmet who accidentally predeceased her 52 years ago.

Dorothy was born in Willenhall, England to George and Annie Booth on December 29, 1934. She lived there into her early 20s, and worked as a telephone operator and secretary. While travelling in Cyprus, she met the love of her life Mehmet, and they married on August 1, 1960 in Nicosia, Cyprus. As their marriage ceremony was conducted in Turkish, a second service was held in London, England for the benefit of her English-speaking family. Feeling there were better opportunities in Canada, Mehmet and Dorothy immigrated to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan in 1963 where Dorothy worked in the office of a T.B. clinic. In 1964 they moved to Teulon, Manitoba where Mehmet set up a veterinary clinic. Dorothy was his right-hand woman and helped out wherever she could. After the sudden passing of her husband, Dorothy was employed by Canada Post at the Teulon Post Office, and eventually became the Postmistress until her retirement. Although incredibly busy working and raising her family, she volunteered in the community by serving as the Secretary Treasurer of the Teulon Figure Skating Club and United Church Sunday School. She was also a member of the United Church Official Board.

Dorothy took pleasure in the simple things in life. She liked doing crosswords and reading. Days were filled with numerous coffee or lunch dates with her many friends. She loved animals, and a part of every day was dedicated to feeding the birds, deer and rabbits that frequented her yard. Dorothy cherished all family visits, and celebrations both big and small.

Dorothy’s two daughters were her greatest priority and she devoted her life to raising them. She was blessed with strength, courage, and selflessness and used these gifts to bring up her girls as a single parent. This was not a small feat, as there was no family support nearby. Dorothy was incredibly proud and supportive of Suzan and Leyla. She was always in attendance at their numerous activities. Dorothy provided her girls with a beautiful life.

A private family ceremony honouring Dorothy’s life is being held on June 16, 2025 at the Teulon United Church.

For those who wish, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

Her family extends their heartfelt appreciation to the wonderful staff at the Simkin Centre for their incredible and compassionate care of mom over the past year.

  • Your mom was a strong, courageous, beautiful and kind person. I have many special memories with your family during my years living in Teulon. We celebrated birthdays together as well as going to numerous events. Some of the best memories are with our moms sitting on the sidelines at the sporting events with the other parents cheering us on. One special memory is when our moms wore big black garbage bags over their heads and bodies with only their glasses sticking out while watching us at a rainy track and field event! The Postal Service motto of : “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds” didn’t just apply to her work! Your mom’s Green Salad was always present as a side dish at all the family gatherings and even now, as I introduce it to the gatherings I go to, wonderful memories of the times our families spent together come flooding back to me. I will always remember your mother’s kindness and warmth. She was truly one of a kind. My deepest sympathy in the loss of your mom. She was a beautiful soul that touched many lives. May her long life, full of loving and joyful moments, comfort you in this time of sorrow. - Posted by: Pam Trombo (Friend) on: Jun 16, 2025

  • You will always be "Mrs. Hassan" to me. It was so wonderful to have another mom around with a British accent and rather impressive I thought that you had such an important job! My generation of girls looked for female leaders and I honestly felt you were one! You were my first example of a hard working single mother. With no support you raised two wonderful girls. You can be proud of the strong, responsible and empathetic woman you raised in Suzan. I am lucky to call your daughter my friend to this day. Rest easy Mrs. Hassan - you've done well ❤️ - Posted by: Julie Karish (nee Scrivener) (Friend of Suzan's) on: Jun 16, 2025

  • So very sorry Suzan (Mark) and Leyla on the passing of your beautiful Mom. Your Mom was looking for a responsible babysitter to look after you both at a very trying time in her life. I always enjoyed looking after you both. I still have a small picture you gave me Suzan and Leyla was jut a baby in the crib. I only had my Mom to raise us also. I will always remember your Mom driving me home after babysitting to make sure I got home safely. I lived in the darkest part of Teulon at that time no street lights hardly. Dorothy, Suzan and Leyla you all have been very special memories for me. Georgina Jones (nee Slater) - Posted by: Georgina Jones (babysitter to her daughters) on: Jun 16, 2025

  • Dorothy was such a wonderful friend and neighbour to me. We had wonderful conversations and she was always there to look after my daughter if I couldn’t get home from work on time to get her from school. At Halloween there was always a special huge bag of treats for Rhiannon. I shall always treasure our friendship and the most incredible woman and friend she was. I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. She will always be remembered with love. From Fern - Posted by: Fern Brunger (Friend and neighbour) on: Jun 15, 2025

  • Being a life long friend of Suzan’s, once Dorthy moved to Winnipeg, I was richly blessed in being able to visit Dorthy and get to know her. It only took one visit to see what a special caring person I was visiting. She loved sharing interesting stories of her life and eagerly listened to my life stories. She loved watching the birds that frequented her bird feeder and had a great love for animals especially cats. She had a great sense of humour and we laughed lots. During our visits, Dorthy always spoke proudly of her two daughters and her son-in-law. I am thankful for my many memorable hours spent with this amazing lady. She, for sure, will be missed! To Suzan (Mark) and Leyla, my sincere condolences in your loss…hold tight to all those great memories with Mom! 🌈🦋♥️ - Posted by: Marlene Mutch (Friend) on: Jun 14, 2025

  • Your Mom was such a welcoming face every morning when she would greet ALL of Teulon as they came to get their mail. Always friendly and made time to chat and always enjoyed interacting with everyone’s children! Your Mom, my Mom and Joyce and John shared a great relationship at the post office! Sincere sympathy to you🩷 She was a wonderful lady! RIP. - Posted by: Marilyn Korotash (Friend) on: Jun 14, 2025
