MARIE (HILDA) SYDOR

(nee LAFRENIERE)

April 17, 1922 – June 15, 2025

Our dear mother has left this earth at 103 years of age. She is preceded by her husband Peter; her two sons, Richard (Lana) and Clark; her grandson Naron Penny; and all of her siblings.

She is survived by her daughter Nancy Penny (Ron); son Bob (Colleen); and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and great great great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and lots of friends.

Hilda grew up on a farm in St. Ambroise Manitoba. She was the youngest of a very large family. Her mother was pregnant 21 times of which 17 survived to adulthood.

Farm life was hard work. Some of the chores included early morning milking of the cows, preparing meals for this large family and the farm hands, lots of baking, and the making of cheese. (This was stored underground as this was their method of refrigeration).

The farm seemed a place of great activity. Her father was close friends with Douglas Campbell who became our premier. Her brother Jellicoe became jig and fiddle champion of western Canada. He played for Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and Queen Elizabeth. My mother was surrounded by lots of love and music.

When Hilda was old enough, she moved to Winnipeg where she met and married our hard working father. They had four children and eventually settled in St. James. They were very happy there. Life was good.

When my father passed in 1990 the youngest son Clark became my mother’s closest companion and eventually care giver for our mother.

They were known as the dynamic duo. They went on adventures every single day. They went everywhere and they seemed to be known by everyone.

Our mother was always happy and she loved meeting everybody. She was full with love and everyone loved her in return.

We would like to thank West Park Manor in Charleswood for taking excellent care of our mother these last three years. They did it with respect, attention, and loving care, with special thanks to Dierdre.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, at St. Ignatius Church, 255 Stafford at Corydon. A Photo Biography honouring Hilda’s life is accessible through the 'tributes' link below.

  • My heart broke when Nancy contacted me to say that sweet Hilda had passed 💔 searching for my paternal cousins the first ones I met were Hilda & Clark. I will never forget that day as excitement filled all our hearts. Hilda was full of love for her family & was filled with knowledge of family history. Sharp as a rock and even had a line or two that would have us giggling. I will miss you terribly sweet Hilda & will never forget you 💐💕 RIP Hilda, your are now dancing with the angels. - Posted by: Lynne Johnston (Cousin) on: Jun 21, 2025

  • I met Hilda when Nancy and I were high school friends around 1960. In the intervening years we did not meet very often, but her beautiful smile will stay with me always. We always felt like we were welcome and cherished as friends of Nancy and her siblings. Our condolences to her family and friends. - Posted by: Ken and Donna Krebs (Friends) on: Jun 21, 2025
