WALTER SLAMA

Peacefully on June 11, 2025, Walter Slama went to meet his Saviour in his eternal home in Heaven. He was 92 years old.

Walter was predeceased by his wife, Lillian (Komenda); parents, Josef and Elizabeth (Nemechek); brother, Joe; sisters, Olga and Dorthy (Heim).

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family, son, Kenneth (Ardelle) and daughter, Sherri-Lynne, sister, Darlene Munchinsky as well as his extended family and friends.

Walter was born in Minitonas, Manitoba on April 23, 1933. He grew up on the family farm during the depression where he became a hard worker and developed an appreciation for the value of a dollar. These attributes would continue to serve him his whole life.

After Walter left the family farm he worked for a few years as a truck driver, on a survey crew, for Canadian National Telegraph and as a meter reader for Winnipeg Hydro. In 1960 he went north to the Inco mine in Thompson, MB where he worked in the smelter for two years and because of his work ethic became shift supervisor.

In 1962, Walter started his 36 year tenure with the provincial government. Beginning at the Norquay building, moving to the Central Powerhouse in 1963 and becoming a mechanical inspector in 1977. Walter’s hard work and willingness to accept new challenges was noticed by his employers and made him an ideal fit for more challenging roles. Walter enjoyed his time with the Department of Labour and semi-retired from government service in 1998, finally officially retiring in 2000.

Walter’s faith was an integral part of his life. While attending Grant Memorial Baptist Church in the late 1950s he met his future wife Lillian. They were married on October 5, 1963. He took on several roles in the church serving as an usher, taking weekly attendance count and as a leader in boy’s brigade. Many lifelong friendships were developed through bible studies and church events.

Walter valued time with his family and always put their needs ahead of his own. He was generous with both his time and resources; he never missed an opportunity to lovingly and willingly step in.

Walter and Lillian enjoyed travelling and experiencing new places. Family trips to Florida, Texas and Hawaii, a bus trip to Branson, Missouri and winters spent in Scottsdale, Arizona with friends were highlights.

Walter was an avid fisherman, whether summer or winter. Later in life he enjoyed recreational golf with friends. He enjoyed his time tinkering and relaxing at the cottage on Red Rock Lake.

Our family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Deer Lodge Centre Lodge 2 West and Tower 5 for their kind and compassionate care. They went over and above by getting to know dad and taking time to comfort and support him during his final days.

Walter will be missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. The family kindly asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Deer Lodge Centre or Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Although I have not been back to Manitoba in a number of years, I fondly remember visits to Wally and my cousin Lilly. He was always very friendly and hospitable. He has joined many of his family now where there will be no more parting. My deepest sympathy to the family he leaves behind. - Posted by: Ellen Dumych Smith (Cousin of Lilly) on: Jun 22, 2025

  • My sympathy and condolences to the Slama family. Though I never met Walter, I still feel like I know him. My dad was Larry Taplin. Him and Walter used to work together in the Department of Labour. He (along with my mom, Gerrie) would often meet Walter (or Wally as my dad called him) and Lil for coffee, and talk frequently about how much they enjoyed their times together. - Posted by: Alina Taplin (Daughter of former coworker) on: Jun 21, 2025
