WALTER AUBREY BEATTIE

December 27, 1936 – June 17, 2025

It is with deep sorrow and love that we announce the passing of Walter Aubrey Beattie - devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend - on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at Riverview Health Centre. He was 88 years old.

Known affectionately to most as Aubrey, he was born in Winnipeg and spent his formative years on Jubilee Avenue. A spirited athlete in his youth, Aubrey was especially passionate about hockey. He could often be seen hauling his gear across the city, eager to lace up his skates wherever there was ice and a game to be played. In later years, he found new joy in the tranquility of fishing and the camaraderie of golf - pursuits he enjoyed for as long as his body allowed.

Aubrey had a deep love of the outdoors and a lifelong reverence for the natural world. This passion led him to a meaningful and fulfilling career as a Manitoba Land Surveyor, where he spent his days walking the land, studying its shape and stories, and helping to shape the province he called home. His appreciation for water in particular was a constant throughout his life - from his boyhood home to his forever home on the Red River, to weekends on Lake Winnipeg and Lake of the Woods, and countless days casting a line - he was never far from its calming presence.

He met the love of his life, Alexandra (Sandra), at the age of 26. Their marriage was a true partnership, filled with laughter, love, and devotion, lasting until Sandra’s passing in 2000. Together, they raised three sons: Michael (Joanne), Scott (Denise), and Callum (Catharine). Aubrey was immensely proud of his family and cherished his role as grandfather to Reid, Lochlan, and Camden.

A respected figure in Manitoba’s business community, Aubrey was both a partner and the driving force behind W.A. Beattie & Associates, a long-standing and trusted name in the surveying profession. He was proud of his work, and always ready with a story - whether about the changing skyline of Winnipeg, a moment in Manitoba’s history, or a memory from the field.

Aubrey’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude for the exceptional care he received in his later years. Special thanks to Dr. Lee Cummings, the dedicated team at CancerCare, and the compassionate nurses, doctors, and caregivers at Riverview Health Centre’s Palliative Care Community.

A celebration of Aubrey’s life will be held on Thursday, July 17 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson Funeral Chapel, 669 Broadway, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Riverview Health Centre Foundation.

Aubrey’s legacy lives on in the love of his family, the stories he told, and the land and water he loved so dearly. He will be deeply missed.
