KAY REIMER

Kay Reimer, nee Katie Krahn, was born on July 4, 1939, in the former Soviet Union, today’s Ukraine. She was the second daughter born to Peter and Katharina Krahn, and would be followed by two brothers and another sister. The family escaped to Germany after the war, and was then sponsored to come to Canada as Displaced Persons. Though they did not have much, they had each other, and the home was full of love and fun. They eventually ended up in Winnipeg and Kay went to school at MBCI until the end of grade 11. That ended her formal schooling, as she went to work to help support the family, but it did not end her love of learning. She became a lifelong learner, especially loving to study the Bible and Christianity.

She met Henry Reimer, and they married on August 4, 1962, at the North Kildonan Mennonite Church. She would be the love of his life for the rest of her days. Three daughters came to join the family, which made a huge move to The Pas, MB in 1970. It was in The Pas that Kay came into her own. The house was always a hub, for neighbourhood kids, their parents, and especially for the women of the neighbourhood. Kay was a housewife, but on every board and organization that helped people in town. She led bible studies out of her home for any ladies who wanted to attend, and acted as a spiritual counsellor to many.

In 1985, Kay and Henry moved to their beloved home at Rocky Lake full time and began their life as empty-nesters. This did not end Kay’s involvement in church, or in the greater Christian community. By this time, she was leading Women’s Aglow, a Christian women’s organization in northern Manitoba. She was responsible for setting up conferences, finding speakers, and running the membership. She was also a leading member of the Grace Church in Cranberry Portage. Here she led adult Bible studies and Sunday school. She also preached on Sundays. And she never stopped learning.

Kay was a fabulous mother and wife. She was also, in later years, a wonderful Oma. Her five grandchildren were loved and appreciated for who they were, and were always welcome at the lake for however long they could stay. Her cooking was phenomenal, and her baking was even better. She had time for anyone who needed it, always. She loved and was loved in return.

In her later years, Kay developed early onset Alzheimer’s. But it did not end the love she had for the Lord or for her family, or the love we had for her. Even at the end, she acknowledged songs from her Christian life and moved her hands to the beat.

Kay went to meet her Lord and Saviour at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, June 30, 2025. While we, who are left behind, mourn and miss her, she is whole again.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date. If you wish, in lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.
