It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Jason Douglas Morell, 53, of Springstein, Manitoba on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Health Sciences Centre (HSC), Winnipeg. Jason passed away peacefully after a prolonged illness.
Born July 20, 1971, in North Bay, ON to George and Anne Morell, the family moved to Thompson, MB in 1973 and Winnipeg in 1980. Jason grew up in Charleswood and moved to Springstein in 2000.
Jason was always hard working, starting his first formal job delivering papers for the Winnipeg Tribune at a young age. He worked repairing bikes and later branched out into hospitality, meeting many wonderful friends, and his spouse of 29 years, Laura Ruppel, at Mother Tuckers restaurant. Jason started working at what was to be a temporary job at Oak Grove Farms in Starbuck, Manitoba in the fall of 2002. Farming soon became a great love - he continued to work for Oak Grove until falling ill in the spring of 2020.
Jason was deeply embedded in the community and spent many hours volunteering at the Starbuck School and rink. Jason was a long-standing member of the Manitoba Road Racing Association. He had a great love of bikes, and for the better part of 24 years volunteered with and attended racing weekends in Gimli. His racing number is 43 and he proudly held many racing championships over the years. The friends made at the track quickly became family and the relationships much more than a few weekends a year.
After the birth of twin boys, Riley and Miles in 2002, Gimli became a family tradition. Jason was an avid outdoorsman with a deep love of fishing and hunting that has been passed on to his boys. Jason is remembered as a beloved son, brother, spouse, father, uncle, friend, and mentor. Jason was exceptionally proud of his boys and grateful to see the fine young men they have become.
The last five years of his life were spent at Health Sciences Centre and he developed many relationships with his health care team. The staff at HSC Winnipeg are nothing short of exceptional. Thank you to the all staff of the SICU, D3, and IICU.
Jason was predeceased by grandparents, George and Ethel Morell, and father Donald George Morell.
He leaves behind his spouse Laura Ruppel and beloved boys, Riley and Miles Morell, mom Anne Morell (Alan Kell) (Sidney, BC), sister Sarah Dundass (Kevin), nephews, Matthew and Ryan Dundass, (Cochrane, AB), uncle Douglas Morell (Winnipeg), in-laws, Dan and Karen Ruppel, sister-in-law Deanna Ruppel (Jason Bell) (Winnipeg) and many close friends in Springstein and Starbuck considered family.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, August 14 at the Starbuck Community Hall, 25 Main Street, Starbuck.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the HSC Foundation. www.hscfoundation.mb.ca/
