GERARD LECUYER

August 2, 1936 – July 9, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Gérard Lécuyer, who left us peacefully at the age of 88 on July 9, 2025, at Victoria Hospital. He has gone to be reunited with his beloved Irène and cherished daughter Denise.

Gérard leaves to cherish his memory his children: Michèle (Dave Hutton), Philippe (Nancy Dufort), Natalie (Augie Osis), his stepson Denis (Wilma) Keating and (Randy Magierowski). He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Ian, Kris, Pascale, Guillaume, Mario, Caleb, Colin, Karinne, Émilie, Julie, and his two great-grandchildren: Noah and Dustin. He is survived by his brothers: Bernard (Lois), Paul (Diane), Ronald (Yvette), Joseph (Yvette), Georges (Darlene); his sisters: Rose (Ted), Cécilia (Robert), Diane (Gilbert), and Maria. Also mourning him are his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Rita, Patricia, Rosaire, Diane, Angèle, Raymond, and Frances, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Gérard was predeceased by his wife Irène, daughter Denise, granddaughter Dana, his parents: Suzanne (Delaloye) and Albert, his siblings: Henri, André, Marcel, and Alice, his in-laws: Germain, Roger, Olga, Normand, Aimé, Marie-Thérèse, Claire, and nephews: Robert and Renald.

Born on August 2, 1936, in Ste. Agathe, Gérard grew up in a large, loving family with 13 siblings. He pursued his education at the Collège de Saint-Boniface and the University of Manitoba, beginning his career in the private sector. However, his calling led him to education, where he began teaching in the St. Boniface School Division.

His career took him and his young family to Sierra Leone with Canada’s Department of External Affairs, and later to Algeria, sharing his passion for learning around the world. Returning to Canada in 1975, he worked at the Bureau of French Education, eventually becoming Director of Special Projects.

In 1981, Gérard was elected MLA for Radisson, serving Manitoba until 1988. He was appointed Minister of Environment, Workplace Safety, and Health. Post-politics, he led significant advancements in French-language services in Yukon and returned to Manitoba in 1990 to serve as Executive Director of the Fédération provinciale des comités de parents du Manitoba (FPCP). His advocacy culminated in a landmark 1993 Supreme Court ruling in favor of French-language education, leading to the creation of the DSFM in 1994 - a defining achievement for Franco-Manitobans. He later returned to Yukon, successfully advocating for school governance rights (1996), before returning to Manitoba to work as a consultant in education, environment, and community development.

At age 79, Gérard fulfilled a lifelong dream, walking the Camino de Santiago with his granddaughter Pascale. He found peace and joy at his beloved Albert Beach cottage, where he made many dear friends and found solace after Irène’s passing. A man of deep faith, compassion, and commitment to community, Gérard devoted his life to helping and loving others.

The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to Pauline Labossière, Gérard’s devoted friend of many years, and his brother Joseph, whose regular visits brought him joy and comfort. Special thanks to the caring staff at Riverwood Square, where Gérard lived since fall 2023, and to the compassionate medical team at Victoria Hospital for their support in his final days.

Those wishing to honour Gérard’s memory may donate to: Francofonds or to L’Arche Winnipeg,

A Mass of Thanksgiving will be celebrated by Brother Germain at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at the Church of the Canadian Martyrs, 289 Dussault Avenue, Windsor Park. Eulogy begins at 10:15 a.m.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Gerard was the Minister of Environment when I was an employee there. He was a fair and decent man. He always took time to listen to his staff. He was also married to my grade one teacher - she was a favourite of mine and my siblings. I was so pleased to meet her again at a Christmas function and to hear her memories of her early years as a young teacher, mother and wife. What an interesting and exciting life Gerard let. Condolences to his family. - Posted by: Barbara Ediger (Employee) on: Jul 19, 2025
