With sadness the family announces the passing of Leonard Charney in the evening of July 15, 2025, at the grace hospice.
Len was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on May 14, 1943.
Len was an avid horse racing fan. His hobbies included bridge, hunting, fishing, gardening, and running marathons in his earlier years.
Len worked at the CNR. He took computer programming courses at Red River College. He graduated first in the class. He then married Gail in 1971, and they moved to Ottawa for a short time where Len worked at Statistics Canada. They moved back to Winnipeg in 1972, and then Len worked for the Canadian wheat board. He took a job with Manitoba data services, which was later bought out by IBM. At IBM Len worked in the asset management department as project manager. Len retired from IBM in 2000.
Len is survived by his wife Gail; daughters, Christine Cornwell (Sean) and Tara Charney; grandson Logan; step-daughter Lesley Larsen; and her children, Ryan (Shafira) and Chelsea; and great-granddaughter Valkyrie; brother Gene Charney (Gloria); sister Dr. Lili Hrabchak; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Penner (Al), Terry Pritchett (Bill), and Cheryl Born (Lloyd), brother-in-law Ron Kmet; and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Emily Charney; brother Bernie; brother-in-law Todd Hrabchak; sister-in-law Ruth Keep; brother-in-law Charles Keep; and sister-in-law Sandra Kmet.
Cremation has taken place according to Len’s wishes.
A memorial service will be held at Unitarian Church 603 Wellington crescent at 2:00 p.m. on July 29.
