Joan was born in Morse, Saskatchewan, the 5th of 8 children. She grew up on the family farm at Glen Kerr, Saskatchewan. At age 16 she came to Brandon and began restaurant work at the Lyceum Café. This is where she met her future husband, Bruce, a handsome young farmer from North Brandon (Elton) district. They were married in November, 1951, and moved from Brandon to the family farm in the spring of 1952. They had a busy life on the farm, and with three children, they both worked very hard. In 1971 they started a dairy farm in the Oak Lake area, fulfilling Bruce’s dream. This was cut short by Bruce’s health problems. Bryce and Maureen took over the dairy in 1976, and Bruce and Joan moved to an acreage south of Oak Lake, known as “The Wallace Place”.
After Dad’s untimely death in 1980, Mom opened the “Homestead Coffee Shop” in the old telephone building in Oak Lake. She sold it in 1986. After working for a while in local restaurants, Mom began a new phase in her life, mainly becoming more involved in the lives of her grandchildren. This enabled her to help out during her granddaughter Karen’s illness, and support the family after Karen’s death. She played a very important part in the lives of all her grandchildren, especially Stephen. Mom moved back to Brandon in 2008, and lived at Brentwood Village Mobile Home Park until July, 2021, at which time she moved back to Oak Lake, this time to Oakwood Place. After a fall in April, 2025, she was no longer able to live on her own, and she was at Hillcrest Personal Care Home at the time of her passing.
She was predeceased by parents, John and Nancy Glover, husband, Bruce, granddaughter Karen, grandson Aaron, sisters Norma, Mary, June, brothers Jack, Ted, Roger, and Bob Glover. She is survived by sisters-in-law Shirley Glover, Sandra Glover, Sandra Speight, and Val Swain. Remembering her with love are daughter, Brenda and husband Brian Giesbrecht, sons Brian and wife Nancy, and Bryce and wife Maureen, grandchildren Diana Davidson and husband Gerond, Daniel Giesbrecht and partner Amber Solomon, Kathryn de Ruiter and husband Ben, Sean Buckley and wife Kristi-Lynn, Allison Hamm and husband Steve, Cheryl Klassen and husband John, Stephen Buckley, Jared Buckley and wife Justine Cornelsen, and thirteen great-grandchildren.
She will always be remembered for her devotion to family, her friendships, her love of animals - both on the farm and her many pets over the years, her wonderful baking which she shared with all, her love of music and playing guitar, her contributions to the community, her relationship with God, and close connections with her church. One of the things she devoted herself to in later years was making scrapbooks for her children and grandchildren. It was truly a labour of love, and from one of those scrapbooks comes her “Recipe for Life: Something to love, Something to do, Something to look forward to”.
A memorial service will be held at the Oak Lake Community Hall, 474 Cameron Street W (North Railway St.), on Friday, August 29 at 11:00 a.m., with a luncheon to follow.
