JOHN LYLE GRAY

1941 - 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Gray on Wednesday, August 12, 2025, at the Riverview Health Centre at the age of 83.

John is lovingly remembered by his wife Lorna (nee Schultz), his daughter Kelly (Christian) Gagné, his son Josh (Karen Adams) and his grandchildren Aurélia, Jurrien, Mac and Schylar as well as family in Sydney, Australia and many friends.

He was predeceased by his first wife Maree.

John Gray was born on October 8, 1941, in Winnipeg to Robert and Hilma Gray (nee Johanson). His early life was marked by loss - at just two years old, he lost his father, Robert, who was killed in France during the Second World War. Raised by his devoted mother Hilma, John grew up with a spirited sense of adventure. In the late 1960s, he set off to backpack around the world, embracing the unknown with curiosity and courage. While traveling through Australia, John met Maree, the woman who would become his first love. After reuniting, they married and built a life together, raising their family until Maree’s passing in 1988.

In time, John found love again with Lorna, and they married in 1992. Together, they continued exploring the world, often cruising to new destinations. John retired from Air Canada in 1996, closing a chapter on a long and dedicated career. Known for his warmth and generosity, he was always ready to lend a helping hand or offer words of encouragement drawn from the hard-earned lessons of a life marked by challenge and perseverance. His kindness left a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to know him.

In keeping with John’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and a private family interment will take place at the Brookside Cemetery.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses and care workers of PRIME at the Misericordia Health Centre for their care, dedication and friendship for John, as well as Riverview Health Centre during his final days.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the PRIME Program at the Misericordia Health Centre, 99 Cornish Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3C 1A2.

  • Even though we have known John and Lorna as neighbours for several years, we only met John on a personal level after he joined PRIME. He was well known and admired by his peers there, and is already missed dearly. Despite his many struggles, John was never bitter and had a great sense of humour. John, your reward for all the good karma you created on Earth, will bless you in this new chapter. You will get to meet your Dad and all the others that have been waiting for you. We will watch over Lorna as she starts her new chapter without you so, you may rest in peace. Debb, George and Matt Solvason - Posted by: Debb and George Solvason (friends) on: Aug 19, 2025

  • RIP John. God saw you were tired so he wrapped His arms around you and took you home to Heaven. May God comfort you Lorna and all your family - Posted by: Fay (friend) on: Aug 17, 2025

  • Please accept my condolences, Lorna; John is now in a better place. I first met John while working at Air Canada and was somehow drawn to him and some of his exploits. After both leaving Air Canada our paths briefly crossed again years later, bringing back some fond memories. I was later saddened to find out that John was having health difficulties, but knew that he was being well looked after by Lorna. - Posted by: Rick Schoenfeld (Friend / Workmate) on: Aug 17, 2025
