It is with full hearts and deep sorrow that the family of Kevin McGarry announces his peaceful passing on August 18, 2025, at the age of 72.
Kevin was born on February 4, 1953, in London, England. His early childhood took him to Ardmore, Ireland where he lived until 1955 when the McGarry family immigrated to Winnipeg.
At St. Paul’s High School, he excelled in every area - awarded the grade 12 gold medal for academics and recognized for his achievements in public speaking, and drama. It was on the high school stage that Kevin met the love of his life, Betty and led to a lifelong partnership filled with devotion, laughter, and a shared purpose.
Kevin began his commercial real estate career at JJ Gibbons, eventually co-founding Colliers Pratt McGarry. In 2002, Kevin transitioned into the biotech industry before returning to real estate in 2015 and partnering with his brother Martin at Cushman & Wakefield.
Kevin was deeply committed to his community. He served on the finance committee of St. John Brebeuf Parish, was a palliative care companion, and a board member with Resource Assistance for Youth (RAY), Centre Venture and the Grace Hospital Foundation.
Amongst all his accomplishments though, he would tell you his greatest was his family. He was always available for his kids, cheering them on at sporting events, assisting with school projects, building the backyard skating rink and spending every school vacation with his family on ski trips, and summers at the family’s cherished cottage at Lake of the Woods. In his later years, Kevin prioritized time with his grandchildren, travelling across North America to be present in their lives, just as he was for his children - always there, always cheering.
He is survived by his loving wife Betty; his daughter Kate (John Toole) and their children, JJ, Anya, and Logan Anne (Calgary); his son Declan (Heather) and their children, Mary Hollon and Fenton (Nashville); his son Connor (Mandy) and their children, Cleary and Miller Grace (Ottawa); his siblings, Pat (Melanie), Deirdre (Don), Anne (Charles), Geraldine (Brian), and Martin (Candice); as well as his sister-in-law Ida Marie Threadkell (Brian 2018 deceased), and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father Dr. Patrick Martin McGarry; his mother Patricia Joan McGarry; and his in-laws, Dr. William J. Friesen and first wife Marie Friesen and second wife Dr. Donna Patton Friesen.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, August 25, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Ignatius Parish, 255 Stafford St., Winnipeg, MB, with a reception to follow in the parish hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grace Hospital Foundation or to a local charity of your choice.

Dear Betty and Family, so sorry to hear about the loss of Kevin. I know you will all miss him dearly. To me Kevin was the Best Boss ever. I had learnt so much during my time at IHS & LLS, and met so many people along the way. Thinking of you all, may he rest peacefully. - Posted by: BRENDA MACLENNAN (FORMER CO-WORKER) on: Aug 25, 2025

My greatest memory is listening to your tales of your family and greatest joys your grandkids. The love you had for your wife and the life you lead. Your contagious laugh and smile. Betty and you were my longest clients to date and meeting with you twice a week never felt like work but something I looked forward to! We would goal scheme and one day we came up with the idea that we would work on pullup's so when you met with all your family at the cabin you could impress the sons and sons-in-law with a pullup showdown! That summer you rocked the pullups not once but twice as Betty forgot to turn the camera on the first time! My heart goes out to all of the McGarry clan I had the pleasure of meeting along the way! You will be forever missed Kevin. - Posted by: Lindsey Gudbjartson (Personal Trainer) on: Aug 25, 2025

My deepest condolences to the McGarry family. I had known Kevin during high school years at St. Paul's and thereafter in real estate business in Winnipeg over the years. Kevin's word was his bond; you could always trust him and count on him. He had, as mentioned, great love for his family, Canada, Winnipeg and the Lake of the Woods. Others have mentioned his infectious laugh, which was unique. Kevin had a great, creative, mind; and it was a very positive experience every time we got together. He will be missed. - Posted by: Peter Harris (Friend) on: Aug 25, 2025

Betty & family - I am thinking of you all as you grieve this terrible loss in your lives. Our friendship through Donna was brief, but very significant and helpful to Donna and me. You were so all encompassing in making her final years happy. You went all out, and made a tough part of her life beautiful. She was our matriarch and you were her source of pride. It was always a treat for me to dine with you on my visits to Winnipeg and the lake. Such a happy family, in every sense of the word. So much going on, so many accomplishments. And that happiness brushed off on me, at a low point in my life. I was pleased to read of Kevin's many accomplishments. He will leave a huge hole in your lives, but I know the many memories you have will eventually fill that gap, and the things he stood for will guide you through the future. My thoughts, love and prayers are with you David Knowles - Posted by: DAVID KNOWLES (friend) on: Aug 24, 2025

So many memories growing up with Kevin. His contagious laugh followed whatever creative adventure he had dreamed up, the best one was as 15/16 year old, we took the train to Jasper’s Marmott Basin to ski. My first ski trip to the mountains. I can’t believe our parents went along with it. A new world opened up for us. He organized the adventure without a hitch. Our paths continued to cross he married the girl that grew up across the street and our kids went to school together too. Condolences to the M clan, Carpe skiem. - Posted by: Ted Bigelow (Friend) on: Aug 23, 2025
