Elwin passed away peacefully with family by his side on August 15, 2025, at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, MB, at the age of 83, after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
He will be lovingly missed by his wife of 59 years, Gail (née Breault); daughters, Kristine (Derry), Heather (Don Malak), Nancy; grandchildren, Maggie (Dog Guide Eevee), Olivia, Sebastien, Simon (Dog Guide Vimy); sisters, Doris Kynoch, Charlotte Balkham, Anita Ballantine, Kay McGill; sisters-in-law, Carol Dartnell, Joan Hopper; brothers-in-law, Allan Hammond, Dewain (Karen) Breault; and a large extended family.
He was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and Walter Ballantine; sister, Della Reimer; parents-in-law, Anna and Orval Breault; sisters-in-law, Elaine Hammond, Pat Munro; brothers-in-law, Willie Kynoch, Harold Reimer, Barry McGill, Don Munro, Terry Dartnell.
Elwin was born on the family farm outside of Glenora, MB, and lived there until his family moved into town to run the general store. He attended school in Glenora, Marringhurst, and Bruxelles. Elwin drove gravel trucks with his father and worked in the Pool grain elevator in Portage La Prairie, MB. He enlisted in the Army in 1961 and served in various locations throughout Canada until his discharge in 1964.
After marrying Gail, they resided in Winnipeg, MB, where he worked for Manitoba Telephone System, earned his mechanic's license from Red River Community College, and drove for several trucking companies including Paul's Hauling and Federated Co-op. After retirement he volunteered at Deer Lodge Centre for more than twelve years, working with patients and serving as a member of the auxiliary board. He loved to interact with the veterans and was honoured to receive a Volunteer of the Year award. Elwin also served on the property committee at Westworth United Church and was a member of the Fort Garry Legion.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor Avenue in Winnipeg, MB.
A private burial will take place at a later date.
Special thanks to the staff of the Grace Hospital Unit 5 South, and primary care physician, Dr. Aaron MacAulay, for their excellent care.
