ELEANOR MARY CRAMP

On August 24, 2025, Eleanor Mary Cramp passed, with her family by her side, at the Misericordia Health Centre. She was born at this hospital almost 86 years prior on September 1, 1939, and it isn't far from where she grew up in the Wolseley area of Winnipeg, on Palmerston Avenue.

Eleanor spent her life working in the service of others as a nurse. She graduated from Winnipeg General Hospital in 1961 and remained lifelong friends with her classmates. She worked in many nursing roles throughout her career and eventually went on to specialise in geriatric nursing becoming a Head Nurse and carrying out this role in numerous nursing homes. She was very proud of her work. She not only placed value in developing knowledge and understanding in her area of expertise, but also in showing compassion, love and kindness towards others in her work and her life.

Harvey, her husband, was the love of her life and she delighted in his sense of humour, which was the reason, along with his gorgeous eyes, that she married him in 1964. Harvey and their three children, Harvey Jr. (Sarah), Suzy (Dan), and Paddy (Jamil) all survive Eleanor along with her five grandchildren, Aidan, Sami, Helena, Cooper and Lincoln, and four step-grandchildren, Sam, Joe, Amelia, and Levi. She was extremely proud of her kids, their accomplishments and the fact they remained very close though they were scattered countries apart from one another. She delighted in her grandkids' stories, and they shared much joy with her. She was also close to her only sibling, Jack (John) Vail who survives her. Among her friends her "angel network" (you all know who you are) sustained her and she believed when they were gone, they were still close to her.

Eleanor loved a party, kissing babies, going barefoot, eating desserts (especially chocolate), trips, photo albums, needlework, and her dogs. Along with her insatiable desire to organise and record events she loved to write and produce handmade books full of memories and stories that she shared with her children and grandchildren. The Victoria Beach Cottage where her and her brother spent their childhood summers (when you could only access it by train) was her favourite place on earth and she passed on this love to her husband, children and grandchildren. She continued to enjoy the cottage (that same one that she grew up in) until this summer where her and Harvey were able to go one last time. She used to say "spread my ashes on Victoria Beach (VB) then listen on a sunny day and you'll hear me giggle as I streak along the water's edge." Eleanor used to chuckle remembering skinny dipping at high noon on her 40th birthday, riding a camel with Harvey in Lanzarote in 1999, and getting a tattoo with her dear friend Greta on their 65th birthday. She also adored riding her big antique bicycle out from the VB gates all the way to Lester beach and back until her late 60s.

Eleanor's motto was "be nice to each other, smile, and try your best every day".

If you wish to attend Eleanor's memorial service, it will be taking place on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home and Cemetery, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3K 1W3. Feel free to (as Eleanor always did) dress colourfully.

  • Eleanor has been a lifelong friend to my mom and growing up my brother sister and I had many fun family gatherings with the Cramp kids. Eleanor treated us like family- held our bridal showers and was a treasured part of our lives. I have fond memories of her sense of humour - crocheting a peter heater for Harvey .. lol. She extended her love and care to my grandmother who stayed in the nursing home that Eleanor ran. So many really good memories. Sending love to Harvey Senior, Harvey Jr, Susie, and Patty. This world is a better place for having had Eleanor in it. ❤️ - Posted by: Shauna Prouten (Family Friend) on: Aug 27, 2025

  • We too feel honored to be included as a later addition to Eleanor's long list of friends. We will miss her driving up on her scooter most mornings to the VB golf course to join the "guys" after their golf game. She loved to share stories about her kids and grandkids which she obviously loved dearly. We also have loved the dinner parties that she and Harvey so graciously hosted on their deck. This always included a beef tenderloin roast that Harvey cooked to perfection. This was also an opportunity to show off the beautiful flowers in their backyard. The colorful flowers were enhanced by her attire and hair. She certainly was a spirited lady and will be missed. Barb and Gene Degen - Posted by: Gene (friend) on: Aug 27, 2025

  • My heartfelt condolences to Harvey, Harvey Jr., Suzy, Paddy and their families. I have known Eleanor my whole life, and still have the bridesmaid’s dress I wore to her wedding 61 years ago. I am so grateful, I was able to say goodbye in her last few days. I have too many Victoria Beach and XMAS memories to recount here, but the memories are treasured. Eleanor was unfailingly optimistic, cheerful and energetic her whole life with a great love for family and friends. She will be missed! - Posted by: Louise Cannon (Cousin) on: Aug 27, 2025
