Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySHIRLEY SELLNER
With deep sadness, we share the passing of our beloved mother, Shirley, at West Park Manor, on August 18, 2025, at the age of 89.
Born in Minnedosa, MB, only child of Gordon and Edith Hutton, mom attended school in Lindsay Ontario, where the family lived. She moved back to Winnipeg after high school and worked as a clerk for the City of Winnipeg until her marriage in 1959. She returned to work when her children were teenagers and was employed by Carlton Cards for 35 years. This job enabled her to talk to everyone!
Mom and dad were married for 63 years, until Ken’s passing in 2023. The family lived in West Kildonan, moving to Lachine Quebec in 1970 and returning to Winnipeg in 1975. They lived in St James for 47 years, moving to assisted living in 2022. Mom was a resident of West Park Manor since May 2024. Her journey with dementia was a tough one, especially after dad passed away. She retained her sense of humor and sociable nature for a long time before passing.
Left to mourn her passing are her children: Debra (Andrew) MacGill, Dave (Corina) and Andy; grandchildren Alexander MacGill (Karen Brizuela), Lauren MacGill and Denver; brother-in-law Brian (Beryle) and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her husband Ken; parents; in-laws Felix and Katharina, brother-in-law Len, and many good friends.
Mom made many special friends from her varied social activities during her life: bridge, euchre, golf, curling. Mom was an avid reader and library patron and loved talking to friends on the phone! We all thought it was an extension of her arm. She liked to listen to news on the radio and music on CDs, especially Frank Sinatra. There was always baking in the house: cinnamon twists and coffee cake were special favorites. To mom’s dismay, Dad was not much of a traveler. Nevertheless, they enjoyed gambling /golfing trips with friends, and family vacations to the US, Canada and Caribbean. Mom loved those three grandchildren and enthusiastically attended most sporting and school events. Mom was a member of St Charles Catholic church for many years until her eyesight diminished. She was a very kind woman, always available to help any friend or family member who needed assistance. We celebrated her 89th birthday with family and friends.
We are grateful to Dr. David Breckman for his care over past years. Thanks to Sturgeon Creek II and the home care workers, especially Kelly, who helped mom remain in assisted living after dad passed. Thank you to the wonderful, caring staff of West Park Manor who took such good care of mom. Her special friend Betty would visit with mom almost every day.
Cremation has taken place. A private family gathering will be held.
In lieu of flowers, remember Shirley and all the good times you shared during those long phone calls.
Please consider a donation to a charity of your choice or to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

My beautiful “Aunty Shirley”. What an amazing person to have as part of our lives throughout our childhood and adulthood. I will always treasure the memories we had from our yearly Grey cup gatherings, the joy of sharing our engagement just days after, and when she met our kids one by one she was a constant part of our lives we were very lucky. Sending our love to all of you. ♥️ - Posted by: Sherree (Friend) on: Sep 02, 2025
