Marjorie is survived by her sisters, Leona Bryant (Bob) of Dundas, Myrna Hannon (Sam) of Calgary, sister-in-law Marilyn Anderson of Hamiota, three sons, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; eldest son Wayne (Pamela) of Calgary: grandchildren Katharine (Jennifer) of Vancouver, Andrew (Anita) of Victoria, Graham (Kristina) of Victoria, great-grandchildren Elliot, Grace, Wallace, Mae, Jude and Remi; middle son Grant (Colleen) of Calgary: grandchildren Nicole (Brendan) of Calgary, Brenna (Miles) of Nashville/Vancouver, great-granddaughter Rose; youngest son Lance of Winnipeg: grandchildren Courtney (Brayden) of Winnipeg, Max of Winnipeg.
Marjorie was born and raised in the hamlet of Oakner, Manitoba to parents Med and Ella Anderson. A school, church, post office, garage, ice skating/curling rink and local store graced the main street of Oakner but over time all these landmarks disappeared. Marjorie moved into Brandon when she was just 17. She soon discovered the true meaning of homesickness, but persevered and made a life in the city. Marjorie would return many times to Oakner with her boys who held special memories of summers spent there. She met her husband, Gordon, not long after the end of WWII through his brother, Don. Marjorie proved that love at first sight is real, as she knew immediately; he was the man she would marry. What was amazing about their love story was that Gordon was a young double hand war amputee and she simply saw right past his disability. It takes an incredibly strong and determined woman to choose this path in life. They were married on July 8th, 1950, raised three sons and spent 40 wonderful years together before Gordon passed in 1991.
Marjorie spent many years on her own but eight years ago she found a wonderful partner, Lloyd Robinson. They met at a dance and their passion for music, dancing and golf continued for all their years together. This late relationship blossomed and brought so much joy into their lives. Marjorie often referred to herself as a “tomboy” - a seldom used term today but everyone knew what she meant. She was an athlete when women were often seen as not having the strength or stamina to play sports. She played hockey until she was 41 and curled competitively for many years. She took up golf when she was almost 50 and, not surprisingly, read everything she could and was quickly addicted to the game. Many of us golfed with her on her 90th birthday and she was still working on her game, convinced that her best golf was still in front of her! Marjorie had so many extraordinary talents that it’s difficult to do them all justice. If she had been born in a different time she would have been an engineer, like her oldest son. Her abilities as a seamstress were remarkable. Her grandchildren would simply explain to Grandma or draw a picture of what they wanted and she would design and create it. She embraced technology when so many her age had little interest in using these scary things called computers! She saw the act of learning as a lifelong journey. Throughout Marjorie’s life the First Presbyterian Church was always an important part of her personal community and a place where she could follow her faith. Her Christian beliefs were a cornerstone for how she lived her life.
Marjorie was an exceptional woman with a generous nature who gave everything of herself to family and friends and was loved by all. Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, now it’s time for you to rest and for all of us to celebrate your remarkable life.
