PATRICIA AGNES STEPHENS

(nee PAXTON)

Peacefully, on September 8, 2025, Patricia Agnes Stephens passed away at the age of 91.

She is survived by her children, Michael (Dorothy), Allan (Billie), Mary (Gerry), Cathy, and John (Maria), eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as cousins in Scotland, England and Canada. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur, in 2022.

Mom was born in Winnipeg on October 4, 1933, and moved to England with her parents in 1935. She returned to Canada with her mother in April 1940. She attended Laura Secord School, St. Mary’s Academy, and Gordon Bell High School. She graduated as an RN from the Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing (Class of 1955B) and began her nursing career with the Victorian Order of Nurses.

Mom met Dad while both attended St. Margaret’s Anglican Church. They married on August 18, 1956, and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 2021. Together they shared a passion for travel and enjoyed many fascinating adventures around the globe. A highlight included a memorable journey to Pakistan to visit the Commonwealth military gravesite of Mom's father.

Mom was devoted to her family. She stayed at home to raise her five children, before later returning to the nursing profession. Pat worked at various Winnipeg care homes and ultimately retired in 1998 as Evening Supervisor at Golden West Centennial Lodge. She fully supported and encouraged her children’s and grandchildren's interests, and attended piano recitals, school musicals, band concerts, etc. She enjoyed sharing her many talents including sewing, quilting, knitting, and cake decorating.

Faith and spirituality were important to Mom, and she was very active in her church communities. She sang in the choir, acted in church dinner theatre productions, participated in fundraising, volunteered in the rummage room, and was a long-time member of the St. Andrew’s Church ACW.

Local community involvement was also meaningful to Pat. She was a member of Bourkevale Community Club, volunteered as a canvasser for a variety of charities, and was Tawny Owl and later Brown Owl of the 7th Brownie Pack (St. James).

Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at 10:30 a.m., St. Andrew’s Anglican Church (2700 Portage Ave). Reception to follow in the Parish Hall.

The family would like to express their gratitude to all the staff at West Park Manor and to physiotherapist Lorisa.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Agape Table, Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, or Assiniboine Park Conservancy would be appreciated.

Mom, we are so proud of the grace, courage and unwavering spirit with which you navigated your final years with dementia. Your strength will continue to inspire us.

“Well done, thou true and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21)
