CATHARINA JOHANNA (TOOS) POORTENAAR

Catharina Johanna (Toos) Poortenaar (Bode) was born in the Netherlands (Bussum) on November 15, 1931, and passed away in Winnipeg on August 28, 2025, at the age of 93.

Our mother married Jacobus Poortenaar (Opa) in 1957 in the Netherlands and together they had two sons: Jacobus (Jack) Poortenaar (Guiliana) and Eddy Poortenaar. Our mother was a very proud grandmother (Oma) and she will be missed very much by all of her grandchildren: Johanna, Cassandra, Christiaan, and Kahleena.

After a short adventure in The Netherlands New Guinea, our family immigrated to Canada in 1964 Our mother was intelligent, caring, and thoughtful. She could add quicker than a calculator. Although she had many career opportunities, her knowledge and skill set ultimately led her to a career in the healthcare field. She spearheaded the initial set up of the Doctor's Billing Office at the Health Sciences Centre and enjoyed a lengthy and rewarding career there before retiring. Our mother made many friends wherever she went and taught us all to accept and appreciate everyone for their unique gifts and talents. She worked hard and was personally motivated to pursue and achieve professional upgrading. Our mother was not afraid to accept a challenge and reach her goals.

As a family, we explored the great Canadian outdoors through fishing, camping, and hiking. Her love for her family had no limits. She taught us to appreciate each and every day and to respect others.

Our mother was predeceased by both her mother (Rieka) and father (Machiel) as well as her brother (Henk) and sister (Anneka). ln addition to her immediate family in Canada, she leaves her cherished extended family in The Netherlands and many dear friends.

Mom (Oma), we love you and miss you. We will never forget the love and devotion you showed to your family. Your life was a shining example of appreciation, generosity, and love.
