I first met Ian through a mutual friend, Clifford Bonneteau, in 1968. Ian came to my house and picked up my guitar and showed me the opening notes of “Classical Gas” by Mason Williams. I was blown away. “How did you figure that out?” I said. It turned out his then girlfriend Donna Chalmers and my future wife Janet Topping were high school chums. He and Donna were married on one of the hottest days in August 1969. Ian Donna and I performed in “The Republic of Manitoba” at the Playhouse Theatre and again in Brandon in 1970. We stayed in touch for fifty-seven years, making sure to visit every Boxing Day. Ian was very active in Habitat for Humanity, the Morrismen Dancers, and the Bunch of Grapes. He hand built a classical lute, as well as their handsome summer cottage. He loved racing his boat from Keewatin to Channel Island. His illness came as quite a shock. He will be missed by many. Now safe in the arms of Jesus. - Posted by: Jerry Dykman (Friend) on: Oct 04, 2025

So sad to read of Ian's passing. Ian was our assigned volunteer (aka building manager) for our numerous appearances as Company of Poets at Crescent Arts Centre (within Crescent United). Helpful and forthright to a T. I realized from the get-go Ian was not only a man of faith, but one who contributed much to his community - IN HIS OWN QUIET WAYS! NOTE: Our early appearances at Crescent Arts Centre set the stage for The Company of Poets to become the largest group of travelling poets visiting care homes, churches & 55+ facilities in Canada, perhaps the world. My deepest gratitudes to Ian Fillingham and his family in these moments of sorrow. - Posted by: Morris (Company of Poets) (Associate) on: Oct 04, 2025

My connection with Ian began around 2006. Following my retirement from GWL, I was very fortunate to be put in contact with Ian. At that time he was very busy with a home renovation business and was looking for some assistance. That was the beginning of a 19 year friendship. I not only enjoyed the reno work itself, but to a greater extent it was working with Ian. I always looked forward to the work, knowing I would learn something new from him. Even on those less than scintillating job, Ian was always positive and a pleasure to work with. He was a good man, and will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. - Posted by: Paul Corby (Friend and work colleague.) on: Oct 04, 2025
