JOHN JOSEPH LYONS

March 28, 1946 - September 30, 2025

John passed away peacefully September 30, 2025 at Riverview Health Centre, Palliative Care, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Born in Winnipeg, John is predeceased by his parents, Martin Lyons and Rose Lyons (nee McGavock), and his loving wife Janet Taylor. He is survived by his brother Martin, sister Rose and family, and his brother Kevin (Sherry), and in-laws, Jill Taylor-Brown (Allen Brown), Jackie McGowan (Ross), Jay Taylor, and their families, and John’s loving companion Gail Lavallee.

John was educated at Saint Paul’s High School in Winnipeg. He graduated with a BA in Philosophy from Western University in London, Ontario.

In 1976 John was hired by St. Andrews Place Inc. to manage their new urban housing complex. When other groups approached St. Andrews to see about managing their properties S.A.M. Management Inc. was created. John became the General Manager for S.A.M. until retiring in 2001, after 25 years of service. John continued to consult for other non-profits upon his retirement.

John's and Janet’s love for horses led them to purchase land on McGillivray Blvd. where they started Prairie View Stables, caring for many horses over the years. They spent happy hours riding, and teaching young nephews and nieces to ride.

We wish to thank the nurses and doctors at Riverview Health Centre for their kindness and care of John over the past weeks of his life.

The family will be holding a private Celebration of Life.

In remembrance of John, charitable donations may be made to CancerCare or the charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I was very saddened to hear of John's passing. John was a truly special person who touched the lives of everyone around him. He had a way of making everyone feel welcome and included. I had the pleasure of spending many hours dancing and socializing with John, and I will always treasure those memories. He was a kind and compassionate person who always put others before himself. He will be missed. Rest in peace dear friend. - Posted by: Irene Hunter (Friend and dance partner) on: Oct 12, 2025

  • We lost our partners in 2014 and both couples had a love of dancing! We kept in touch with our birthdays. I wished him a very happy birthday but I wondered in June (my birthday) what happened to him? I am sure he is with Jan again! He told me lots of stories about his nieces and nephews. He relished every one of them! His family was the most important thing for him. I am so sorry for your loss! - Posted by: Carol De Baets (Friend) on: Oct 11, 2025

  • I had the pleasure of instructing John in Ballroom dance several years ago. He’d come in faithfully once a week, sometimes by himself, and other times with his friend Carol, Pat, or Irene as a partner. The last partner he enjoyed a lesson with was Gail. He loved his dancing and was proud of what he’d accomplish in each class. (He even taught me a thing, or two!) My heartfelt condolences to you, Gail, and to the rest of John’s family. - Posted by: Kathryn McGuire (Friend/dance instructor) on: Oct 11, 2025
