Surrounded by family, it is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Allan Clifford Briscoe on Sunday, October 19, 2025, age 90.
Allan will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his beloved wife Ellen of 68 years, sons Stephen and Kevin (Ainsley), daughters Elizabeth (Rod) and Kathleen, sons Allan Jr. (Shauna) and Keith (Brian) as well as seven grandchildren; Ben, Sam (Keya), Michaela (Austin), Remy (Alexandra), Ian (Amanda), Owen and Quinn.
One of twelve children, Allan is survived by sisters Bernice, Cecilia and Maureen and is predeceased by parents John and Elizabeth and siblings John (Jack), Lillian, Hazel, Dennis, James, Kenneth, Raymond and Elsie.
Allan grew up in St. Vital and attended Glenlawn Collegiate excelling in golf and hockey. He also enjoyed racket sports, tennis in particular, boasting many epic wins amongst his sons.
Allan will always be remembered for his quick laugh, wicked sense of humour and his interest in gardening, woodworking, nature and science which can be attested by his nightstand stack of reading material. He was “that man” on the street with the green and immaculate lawn and took great pride in his many projects executing them with perfection. Allan was a family man and supported his children in their endeavours. He will also be remembered for his generosity and was a consummate provider for his family.
Allan’s career in the insurance industry began in 1953 as a clerk with the Canadian Underwriters’ Association (CUA), where he met Ellen and married on July 20, 1957. In 1974 the CUA transitioned to the Insurers’ Advisory Organization (IAO) where he worked his way through the organization and received a promotion as Manitoba Regional Manager. In 1987, Allan was promoted as Ontario Regional Manager working out of Toronto until his retirement in 1990. Allan loved Toronto and enjoyed the extended gardening season. Allan and Ellen moved back to Winnipeg in 2001 following Ellen’s retirement from the Etobicoke Board of Education. In his retirement Allan focused on his love for gardening. Recruiting his two daughters, Allan joined the South Winnipeg Garden Club where he quickly became the go-to person in sharing his knowledge with fellow gardeners and received the Master Gardener award on five occasions.
