It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William Edward Joseph Metzler, on October 20, 2025, peacefully, at age 90 years, to be with his beloved Marlene.
Bill was born in Winnipeg on June 30, 1935. He grew up in the West End and briefly lived in Montreal. As a young man, he worked on Baffin Island on the DEW Line. In 1957, he joined the City of Winnipeg Fire Department, a career lasting 40 years, becoming Battalion Chief, before enjoying a lengthy and comfortable retirement.
On March 30, 1959, he married Marlene Brown and had two daughters, Kimberley and Diana, and later, a grandson, Jeff. In 1966 they purchased a house in Woodhaven which was his pride and joy and would be a home they enjoyed for almost 60 years. Working in the yard was a labour of love for Bill. Dad took us on long camping trips, coast-to-coast. He was an excellent cook. He was a bridge player, enjoyed swimming, always had a book going, and was a dog lover. He was a member of Elmhurst Golf Club and went on golf trips around the US. He was an avid curler, extensively involved in Canadian Firefighters Curling Association for many years, his team winning several championships and he made lasting friendships from every province.
Bill loved to listen to people’s stories and was always there for his neighbors and friends. He was a stoic, thoughtful, generous, and devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, nephew, cousin. To know Bill was to know his witty, and sometimes outrageous, sense of humour, the memories of which will surely bring smiles. He will be dearly missed. May he rest in everlasting peace.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB.

I met Billy “Bad” in 1981 and we became great friends from the start. Often curling and golfing together through the years. Will miss his loud, gregarious laughter he so often shared on our many trips with Marlene, Debbie & I. Rest in Peace. - Posted by: Ken MacLeod (Friend) on: Oct 25, 2025
