YVONNE (CHERRY) CHASE

(nee BALLENTYNE)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Yvonne “Cherry” Chase (née Ballentyne).

Beloved wife of Keith Chase for 27 years. Loving stepmother of Deborah, Hugh, and Henderson. Loving Godmother to Henderson, and Alicia, and cherished step- grandmother to Bradyn, Daunte and Alexander. Dear sister to Andrea Grant (née Ballentyne) and Ken (Wanda). Proud aunt to three nieces and two nephews. Honorary aunt to many others who lovingly called her “Aunty Yvonne.” God-sister to Adleith “Twinkle” McIntosh.

Yvonne was predeceased by her parents, Ruth Adina Ballentyne (née Lewin) (August 2000) and Alfred August Ballentyne (November 2000). She will be lovingly remembered by numerous other relatives and friends.

Born in Jamaica, West Indies, Yvonne immigrated to Canada with her parents in the early 1960s. Her parents, both educators, taught in several First Nations communities in Northern Manitoba. In 1964, the family moved to Alberta and later to Manitoba, where Yvonne attended Brandon University and earned her Registered Nursing (Psychiatric) designation. She went on to work at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. Yvonne cherished her Jamaican roots and the early years that shaped her strength and resilience.

She attended North Street Moravian Church and received her education at Ardenne High School in Kingston, Jamaica, later working for the Ministry of Education there. With dreams and aspirations guiding her, Yvonne migrated to Canada in the 1960s to join her beloved parents, Alfred and Ruth. Canada became the canvas for her growth and service. She pursued higher education and dedicated herself to the noble profession of nursing, where her compassion and care touched countless lives-a true reflection of the love she had known and shared throughout her life. Yvonne was a devoted member of Westminster United Church (N.W. Maryland and Westminster).

She was also deeply involved in Winnipeg’s Folklorama Festival from its inception in 1970, particularly with the Caribbean Pavilion. Yvonne played a vital role for many years, serving as quasi musical director, choreographer, and costume designer for the Folklorama Caribbean Folk Choir. Folklorama held a special place in her heart - through her dedication, she helped share the vibrant spirit, joy, and culture of the Caribbean with her adopted home in Canada. Yvonne “Cherry” will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, and her unwavering pride in both her Jamaican heritage and Canadian community. She touched countless lives with her kindness, laughter, and music.

The viewing will be on Monday, November 3, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., prior to her services and interment at Glen Lawn Funeral Home and Cemetery located at 455 Lagimodiere Blvd, Winnipeg, MB R2J4J4. Rev. Doug Martindale M.L.A from Westminister United Church will be officiating services and interment.
